They hire at 16 unless some states are different I highly doubt this. I worked there and worked my way all the way up to assistant manager in just 6years. I was a manager lower level but at least I was a manager at the age of 19. Now I am an accountant. I say do it. Work hard and the money will come trust me. Plus you can teach people more then someone they just hire off the streets. Hard work and dedication pays off don't be scared.

I absolutely agree, who knows with hard work you could be petcare manager in a few years. I was just a stocker when I started. Worked my ass off and just over a year later i'm pet products manager(stocking manager). 19 also like ray777 was too, still 19 too. Go for it, people complain because they sell bad fish or whatever, but it's not all about the fish, they have many positions that can lead to a very good job that you might like.

ya, i heard they hire anywere from 16-18 depending on the store.

And ya, i know i would have to mess with the other animals, not just fish. (i've always wanted to hold those little snakes they have:nilly:) but i would probably stay around the fish area when im not to busy with other animals. (or petting, i mean, "caring" for the poor humaine society kittys, there always so sociable:grinno:)

plus my school has a class that gets you 3 credits for a semester, and all you do is go to work, you even get to leave school early for it, and they pay you extra i think. sounds like a win win win for me.

Oh believe me you will get to spend alot of time around the fish tanks. That's where their desk is in our petsmart, and they just stand there talking(I mean working).:D

Your arguement is like saying it is wrong that walmart sells tires because they don't also sell cars.

I wouldn't risk my life with a car that was sold in walmart

To OP: Most people work jobs that later out turn to be awful in comparison. If you think you're up to it, then by all means go for it. You can also help keep other employees in line, like the one who was shocked and questioned my girlfriend for putting an airstone in with her betta.

Just remember not to go all high and mighty on people and to follow the store policeys. Nothing is worse than a know-it-all kid (trust me, i'm a teacher). You will be low man on the totem pole for a while, but the job experience you gain will be worth it.

do it, even though they usually only have crappy fish, first hand experience is the best way to learn about how to care for new species

I work for my LFS, ive been there for a year now i work every weekend, not had one off, i do holidays and weekdays, and at the beginning i loved it. But a few months ago ive grown tired of it. Its takes it strain, i neglected my tanks due to being sick of doing them at work to have to do more at home.

The money and discount is nice yes but it does spoil the hobby. I do animal care at college and its a nice break dealing with other animals and reptiles for a change as i do have a solid knowledge of other pets aswell. Its not a clean job.

I sorta realised theres more important things going on at the moment. Ive got another weekend of working in the shop. it certainy takes its toll.

Sorry for being negative LOL :D
