Possible job at petsmart (lol)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I worked at Petco they hired at 18, and at Pet Supermarket they would hire 17 year olds, but even though it is not as good experience as a LFS, the big stores will have more consistent work available and such, but they will at times have you work other areas, even if you are an aquatics specialist or whatver equivalent they have you at..so be ready to occasionally have to change the bedding on hamsters

I really don't see how they are destroying the hobby. Please explain.

Because they attempt to dumb down and package a hobby into a neat little box. this is a hobby and needs to be treated as such. They hire people and proclaim them to be specialists b/c they read a plamphlet and take a quiz. Take a place like walmart, they offer a 55 gallon kit for less than an lfs PAYS for it, this hurts the hobby because what good is a place to buy cheap stuff if there is no place to buy fish? you will see over time Petsmarts will have less and less and less fish/aquarium they have molested and destroyed the hobby and in turn damaged it, now it is less profitable for them, so guess what, their fish sections are getting smaller and smaller. PetCo is doing this too.

Go to Petsmart, and teach them about fish care. We all start somewhere. I worked at a fish store for awhile. It's a start, and it puts something on your resume for later in life.

Totaly agree!!:D

I've worked at what could be described as the UK equivalent of PetSmart for the past six months or so. It's depressing.

Ummm... sorry still don't see it ruining the hobby. So you're saying they offer stuff you need at a cheaper price? Sounds good to me. Your arguement is like saying it is wrong that walmart sells tires because they don't also sell cars.

I'm all for cheaper prices and ....oh yea... capitalism.

To the op: Every job will have its ups and downs. If you are willing to start at the bottom and work your way up and not affraid to get your hands dirty you will go far.

nothing wrong with petsmart,I worked there for a while as a stocker. I don't remember how much I got payed it was some where around $5.75 to 7.00 an hour and that was when I was 18(which was almost 9 years ago).. now on disability for basiclly my whole life.

sorry to here that, but it seems to me on your post that petsmart caused it. =(

I would pick the lfs over petsmart anyday, its just that the nearest lfs is about... 40-50 miles away down I45, which gets a b#$% of traffic every day.

Reason why i'm picking petsmart and not walmart or something for a first job.
atleast at petsmart they have something i could enjoy doing, i would go insane moving carts, stocking boxes all day. would rather scrub tanks, mess with other cool animals i usually don't get to mess with. it's the lesser of two evils :)

both my brothers worked at walmart before they whent off to the airforce and they said it was horrible and depressing, didn't want to step foot in walmart again.

And i need income to drive my hobby:headbang2

any amount would be more than i'm making now ;)

Petsmart hires at 18, that's what they usually want. But then again my brother started at 17, so yeah. I started at 18(now 19).

You wouldn't be working just with the fish though. That section is under the Petcare department. Meaning you will get to feed the fish, change water, etc, but also have to administer medicine to gecko's fish, others. Change bedding to the chinchillas, hamsters, and the guinea pigs. So it's not just messing with the fishes just to tell ya.

I like Petsmart(stocking manager though) so don't really know alot about Petcare, but I like the job and workplace at least.

Also you would start at least $7.50, unless they think you just really crappy, lol.

They hire at 16 unless some states are different I highly doubt this. I worked there and worked my way all the way up to assistant manager in just 6years. I was a manager lower level but at least I was a manager at the age of 19. Now I am an accountant. I say do it. Work hard and the money will come trust me. Plus you can teach people more then someone they just hire off the streets. Hard work and dedication pays off don't be scared.
