Possible Piranha Permit in Florida?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish I had the money to have a piranha tank when I was 13... that would of been all my allowance and christmas presents for like 3 years...

If your into the marine biology thing and some agressive fish why not do a chichlid? Unless theres a specific reason why you want p's... but I don't see as that happening legaly. Chichlids are easy to breed and a lot more colorful. I only have experience with convicts but there far meaner than the p's plus they have all the intresting rock digging.

What if Florida get's infested by piranha? In every single FW body of water there were shoals of piranha, Wouldn't they have to let people keep them? Otherwise I'd just go catch one.

My experience is this: It was 8 months ago, and also when I called they said they were making the rules much more stringent in the upcoming months.

Application is zero dollars. Yes, I was suprised myself.

You can it two ways: educational or if you are a business...

I guess business is non-relevant considering you DO NOT have a business and won't be able to provide the simplest document pertaining its status.

Now, education is tricky and I thought perhaps I could have had a chance (after all, what qualifies as studying?). Anyways, nope, you need a LICENSED FACILITY that is APPROVED BY FWC.

To sum it up...Get a Gar instead or grow to be a crafty politician to get rid of this ban!

Best of Luck!

Yeah, there are lots of hoops to jump through...even for a zoo/aquarium. It's not easy, and you also really can't do the shady "Oh, I'm a biologist" routine with them. FWC aren't idiots. Also, something people forget, any time you obtain a permit - you're open to inspection of that facility at any given point to make sure you are up to standards. I have yet to see a private owner issued any type of permit for prohibited species in FL.

Well I want to be a Marine Biologist so if I'm still in Florida I'll just get a permit and study them.

It doesn't work like that. You can't just claim to be studying them and keep them at your house unless your in an actual legit lab or public display/zoo and not just the basement of your own house.

If it did work that way imagine how many more botonists there would be growing plants for science... Hmm.... ;)
