Most people dont realise how hard running a LFS is and what may seem to be outrageous prices to some are in fact quite reasonable when running a 7 day a week, 12 hour a day business. Livestock is a risky business that isnt insured.

While there may be cheaper places available, most cheaply priced outlets have gone bankrupt or not lasted. Its amazing how many people want RARE/QUALITY and CHEAP in the same fish or product. I respectfully suggest you simply not buy fish you think are too expensive for you. If someone is buying them then they are not TOO expensive. Besides, you havent seen EXPENSIVE fish until you have come to Australia.

oops hope this doesnt come accross as too critical but thats how I see things.

OK, gotta new one!

8" Green Puffer, being kept in FRESH water, fungus fins, hole/lesion in head, for...

$99!

I felt so bad for that fish, it was just bobbing at the surface. It looks blind in one eye also.

The LFS I always give my flowerhorns too doesn't understand how to price fish. They will sell a 6" beautiful flowerhorn with trailing fins, uniform body with a uniform bump on his head for $40-$60.

Then I give them some of my ugly ones that I grew out and couldn't determine male or female at 7" and they price it at the same effing price.

They have a huge redtail catfish that is in a 8'by4' acrylic tank and they said it would be about 500 dollars+. It is about 3-4 feet long, but who's going to buy a huge redtail when you can grow one that big in no time at all? REdtails don't fall into the category of slow growers if you ask me.

They did have a 24 inch B. Microlepis once. I don;t know how much it was going for, but its gone now.

There was an LFS near me that frequently had Viejas and Flowerhorns in stock. Now, I know Viejas are a little bit rarer than say an Oscar, but 6-8" syns and blackbelts were regularly listed from $80-150. Low-grade flowerhorns (and I mean, really low grade) were usually $100-250.

The local chain the store was part of went bankrupt, though, so I guess the prices were high for a reason.

1" Electric blue JD, 59.99. Looked good but outrageous price
