RTCs WILL eat anything even slightly smaller in your tank....
 
If setting up a planted tank, always get flourite or laterite as a first layer of substrate for rooted plants. Lighting should always be adequate. Make sure your fish or inverts won't destroy the plants and let the root systems establish before adding more boisterous fish.

Also continuing with Piranha, don't buy them because you think you will have ultra aggressive fish that murder anything that goes near the water. They actually tend to be more on the skittish side.
