Hi Miles,

this is a stunning ray and when I first saw the picture I wondered what species it could be. The picture is also shown in the first Arraia book from Taiwan p.152
The book is written in chinese, I can only read the scientific names.
Below that picture you can find the names P. signata and P. falkneri.

But I think this is not a falkneri and not a signata.
Maybe P. constellata? I don't know.

P. signata grow much larger than always written. I saw a picture of a specimen with 60cm diskwidth.

This is the pic from the Arraia book, it is one of my references.. :D

The P. Constellata looked quite a bit different, but at the same time their are 3-4 rays in the Arraia book that are unidentified or only have a single picture.

I found another reference photo of P. Signata, and it looked like a HUGE castexi otorongo to me..

Thanks for the info.. Any other photos or links to Signata?

Hello,

thats a damn nice Otorongo male, wow !

Curious, why do you think this ray is Castexi?

You would think it would be easily identified as a Castexi, if that's what it really was.. However, no one has mentioned it as a Castexi..

Whatever it is.. It is very nice.

I seem to disagree.. I have seen hundreds of pictures of Castexi variants, and the pattern structure is nothing like any I have seen, unless you bring hybridization into the picture..

Also, the structure of the eyes and spheracles, and the tail.. it's just so far from a castexi, even if you try to categorize the pattern under a castexi variant..

This fish is also collected from the Parnaiba River, which I am unsure if Castexi are very abundant from that area? I understood they were more prevalent in Peru and the western/SW half of S.A.

Heres another picture I found of a P. Signata, which looks MUCH more like a Castexi, IMO.. Looks larger than FishBase.org says they can get.

I have a asian stingray book and they have a pic of this exact ray under the castexi family. Im going to open a new thread with some pics of the book.
