Okay guys, let me know what you think?

I've been Crags Listing 125 gallon tanks. Times are rough out there and I've been seeing great deals. I have 3 of them now!

What I've been thinking about doing is buying a 1/2" 6 foot by 6 foot piece of glass. Using that as a base and disassembling my 125's for the side pieces of glass. The tank would be approximately 6 foot long by 6 foot wide by 2 feet deep. Ideally I would not have to cut glass to fit, I would just have the base made to accept my existing glass. This would use the existing 1/2" glass because there's no added pressure going wider and I would get this massive 2 foot deep tank that I would build right in the center of an extra bedroom.

I think I would euro brace the top perimeter of the tank using the left over bottoms of the 125's

Cut list from GARF:

Bottom = 71 " x 72"
Front = 72 " x 24"
Back = 72 " x 24"
2 Sides = 24 " x 72"
Top Front/Back brace = 71 " x 2"
Top Sides brace = 72 " x 2" - I should be able to get a glass shop to cut my existing bottom used 125's for me???

So am I :screwy: ??

Awesome idea, please keep us posted.

Cheers,
Ken.

I like your idea. You can definately get a 6' x 6' piece of glass...at the glass company I work for we order glass bigger than that all the time. Only thing about using the bottom glass from the 125's for euro bracing is make sure it isn't tempered glass, otherwise you will have many more pieces when you try to cut it than you intended.

wouldn't that be too much force on the panes of glass? thus making it crack?

I don't understand? Are you talking about the side panels? They would have the exact amount of "force" as the original 125 fish tank. Or are you talking about the bottom piece? That also would have the same pressure as the original 125 gallon tank.

I checked, they are not tempered.

The whole idea sounds reasonable to me. The seams will be a bit odd to make it work, but you should be good.
