Praying mantis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i will continue to update them as they grow, it would also be great to see if any other members have any mantids

Was trimming my ornamental grass in my backyard, and discovered a mantis egg case on one of the dried stems. Hands down my favorite of the insect world, I also get upset when people who see one just minding it own business , that persons first reaction is to kill the prehistoric insect. Praying Mantis are protected in Ohio, caught killing one is a 500 dollar fine!!!:) Almost forgot to mentioned left grass with egg case untouched.

i love mantids, if i see one this summer maybe ill keep him... what do you feed yours? also where did you get the ornamental sp.?

i feed mine pinhead crickets and then mealworms and bigger crickets as they get big enough, and also whatever I find crawling into my house or anything I catch in my yard. I got these 3 from a vendor online, and I got the rest from a local reptile expo. they're relatively cheap which is good

You probably could order ornamental mantids online. When I kept praying mantids they were fed grasshoppers that I would catch for them. Crickets sold at the lfs would suffice.

Store bought crickets are fine for most species (as long as they are properly gut loaded) however some species only eat flying insects
