Pre-Purchase research

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's not very big, he's sitting at just the right spot of that cup, and it makes him look much bigger than he is.

That's the cup that the petstore sent him home in, and I think I like the bags better, if you hit a bump, it's not going to hurt him to hit the side of a bag, on a plastic container, I was afraid it might injure him on the way home!! Plus, that cup is only about 6 inches wide, and he had plenty of space to swim around in while we were in the car.

I've read a dozen sites, and they always say x is the MINIMUM size you'd want to go, but they always love bigger and better spaces.

for example, piranah-info.com said 8-10 gallons for a juvenile is enough space, and I have mine in a ten, it doesn't mean it's his permanent home, b/c I know he'll get bigger, and he'll need some buddies, but, until I move my PET goldfish somewhere else, he'll have to hangout in there.

So much for "Pre-Purchase research":screwy:

Reading every website I could find for a week and a half, yea, I know, not pre-purchase research. It was either get this one NOW, and get the tank up and ready so I could special order the rest, or not get them at all.

So excuse me if our petstore is stupid and can't see much point in selling an exotic fish more than once. There were 2 the other day when I went in, and the one I bought was the last.

I really don't want to pay huge shipping fees, and I also don't wish to drive out of state to get one. On top of that, I know someone who has a couple of them who can help me out if I need it.

That said, WHEN I set up the 75 gallon tank for my fish(es) what is the best substrate for piranhas?

I know they like plants and driftwood, stuff to hide in/around, and I have very fine sand, and somewhat more coarse sand, and typical AQ gravel (which I KNOW is not the best choice).

I'd do a bare tank, but 1, I wouldn't want them living in a tank where the only view is a tank wall. 2, I can't STAND a bare looking tank. 3, I know they're skittish by nature, and need lots of privacy. I know I'd want somewhere to hide from some funky-looking creature watching me!!

And with sand, how do you keep the silt down? That was going to be my first sub choice, but every time I have used it with my goldies, it clouds my water super bad.

with sand, set it all up let it sit for a day it should be fine ( not even a day )

i would of done sand if i had the choice when i set mine up. but i already had the gravel

Thanks so much!!

I really would've waited until my 75 was up, but, like I said, that was the last one, and the clerk said that they weren't planning on ordering anymore, so I figured I'd get this little one, and get a proper size tank setup and decorated, and next week he'll be in the 75, hopefully with some buddies!!

I want to do it right, but I felt like that was my chance to get them, and if I didn't then, I wouldn't at all.

Thanks, I'm head over heels for the little snot!!
I can't even stay mad at him for eating his tank mates (I knew it was gonna happen, but he could've waited, and saved me about $4!!)

I'm working on talking my fiance into getting a 50 so we can play musical tanks. :D

Congrats on your new fish, If they are about 3" than you could fit more than one in a 10 gallon tank.

And I love how you say it will only be in there for a couple weeks, but everyone seems not not read this and flame you anyway.

Flame me if you want

But I've kept 12 x 2" Pbass and a 5" jurnese in a 10gallon.. I moved them out after about 2 weeks. But they all did fine, I had an aquaclear on it which was wayyy to much filteration, and I did a w/c every day but they all thrived..

At that price I would pick up about 5-6 but just make sure you get a bigger tank asap.
