thanks for all the replies. It's certainly giving me some research to do. I thought about an oscar because of their great personality, but for some reason I've never been a big fan of them when they get big. The red wolf looks very interesting. It looks like I'll need to set the 125 up sooner. Are any of these fish illegal in the U.S.?

I also live about 1/2 hour from school and would rather take the equipment down for the summer and take it home. How difficult would that be?

Thanks

You would love the Red wolf.. Easily one of my favorite fish. They constantly swim around looking for food and beg for food when you approach the tank. They shouldn't be illegal in your state, I think Florida might be the only state but I'm not sure about that.

Umm.. they would be equal to snakeheads and surpass "most" pirahna's in dangerousness..

Ummmmm........You're very wrong...:screwy:

Have you seen a wolf fish tear apart a 10 inch Bass like this snakehead? Didn't think so......

Wolf fish are somewhat dangerous and they can inflict damage but they aren't "equal" to snakeheads in dangerousness...

A child could easily lose a few fingers to a snakehead.....

Anyways, i highly doubt the teacher would let the students put their fingers in the tank whether it's filled w/ oscars, red wolfs, or any fish for that matter...........

You're right, but since we can't have snakeheads in the U.S., I'm not even looking at that. I'd never let my students put their fingers in the tank so that's not an issue.

Not trying to get in a debate between wolf fish and snakeheads because thats been done 1,000,000 times. Obviously you've never owned a wolf fish to see what they can do. ;)

To the OP let me know if you need help finding a red wolf :D

Ooooh my fish is more aggressive than yours.....who cares? Its irrelevant to this thread anyway.

In a 29 gallon, you can't get much. A 125 would be a ton better. Then put get a male jag.
A breeding pair of cichlids would be really awesome though.

Just make the students sign a disclaimer that any loss of limbs from wolf fish is purely coincidental and you are not responsible. =P

:screwy:Actually.......I have owned both wolves and snakeheads in the past and I know that they aren't the same. I wasn't trying to get into a debate but I do find it rather irritating when people hand out false information. Wolf fish and snakeheads aren't "equal" in aggressiveness whatsoever. Snakeheads are much much more aggressive. It's quite obvious you've never owned snakeheads before.

To the OP. I highly recommend the Wolf Fish. They get much much bigger than red wolfs and it would be a sight to see a full grown 20" monster wolf fish in your 120 gallon. But don't take my word for it. Feel free to look them up. Google Wolf Fish (hoplias malabaricus) :naughty:

Here's a decent picture of a larger wolf fish.

I vote red wolf fish for the 29. That was the first fish i wanted when my friend gave me my first tank, a "30 gallon" as he called it. Had to nix the fish idea when i found out it was a 20. :( Free tank tho!:nilly:

Thanks guys, I don't know about the snakehead versus wolf debate. Heck, if they weren't illegal I'd go with a snakehead in a heartbeat. Except for the darned thing jumping out all the time, I loved it. I'm basically looking for something that hunts down a feeder every now and then to show the kids.

The wolf fish looks very interesting, but it also looks like it's hard to get. What do you all think about the orange pike cichlid the LFS recommended? I'll have to stop by this week to see if they could get a wolf. That other one looks pretty darned big. Would a 120 be big enough for a 20" wolf fish?

Thanks

hope your class doesnt have any tree hugger parents..........could spell trouble for a predatory fish in the class room.
