What is the nitrate reading for the tap water supply? If it is lower than the tank then more water changes may be needed, I suspect the tap water is high too though based on size of changes you are doing.

I would suggest adding some pothos plants above the tank, epriprenum aureum (I think) or devils ivy.

I use a drip instead of large changes but you need a waste pipe for that. Make sure you have clean filters ( in old tank water) if you are changing 50% every third day it has to be the tap water if you are really doing that much. RO would be a solution to this but a pain to use if you remineralise correctly.

If then tap water is very high then you need an ion exchange resin, I have run these on the tank before and it can bring 100ppm to 0 overnight on 100 gal tank.

puffykid: Nitrates? Here in Denmark there's "nitrit" and "nitrat" and it's nitrit there is the problem. Just so we're talking about the same thing :) It's kinda difficult for me to explain it correctly in english
Yeah. A p. motoro is a freshwater stingray.

What's LR?

Just Toby: Just checked my tap water (with the strips) and everything turns out "0" - Green - Perfect ;)

I can tell that I have 4 cichla monoculus, 1 black arawana, 1 flag tail, 10 silver dollars, 1 sorubim lima and 2 stingrays. It works out perfectly but of course that means I feed a lot - maybe that's the problem? I feed often cause i've heard that's the best.
