Preparing to Buy a Stingray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wet/dry filters are efficient. The good thing about a sump is they add water volume to your system and all the equipment, pump, heaters etc goes in the sump and not in the tank... as a general rule though, if you can fit more filtration under you tank - you haven’t got enough.

Hate to break it to you as well dude but although that size tank may seem big. It’s too small for a forever home for a adult ray (especially a motoro). You’ll need a bigger tank with in 2 years.

I would not place a sump on top of your tank although I've seen it done before I would recommend having gravity fed by the intake instead of using a pump. Wet/Dry although efficient its old. I'd buy a 55-75g stick it under your tank load it with ceramic media or, go to Home Depot buy some acrylic baffles and make a k1 compartment.

You'll need to rethink this whole idea. Spend some time here learning about ray keeping and start saving towards a very large tank and everything you'll need for a fluidized sump set up. Ray keeping is a serious challenge and will cost you serious cash. Best to go into it with as much knowledge as possible. For your tank you'll want to be looking at dimensions of no less than 96×36×24. Use that 135 gallon tank for a sump. If you try to skimp on the tank or filtration the whole plan will be for nothing as you'll be doomed to fail right from the start. Rays are heavy waste producers and get incredibly large. Big tanks and big filtration is really the only way to make it work. It's worth the trouble though, keeping rays has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my entire life!
