- the bowfin does develop a nice fluorescent green on the paired fins and belly during the spawning time of the year, and he also retains some of this color throughout the year. i definitely enjoy this fish, and he's quite personable...i just don't plan on keeping him with others anytime soon!
- the gar i'm holding in the last pic is indeed an alligator gar, caught out of a Louisiana bayou. fish was 5' long, and although we didn't get to weigh it exactly, it was around 30-40 lbs. dealing with this fish on the boat reminded me of what you see on tv when they're wrangling alligators! we had a special wooden stick ("the bite-bar") we needed to put in it's mouth as well to untangle it. fish was transported to a nearby aquaculture facility (yes, it's still alive in this photo) --

thanks! i personally very much enjoy lungfishes, and the African species tend to be more active in my opinion...although as a group lungfishes are not often the most active of fishes. Africans should be kept alone as they will randomly and unpredictably attack tankmates, but that being said, they are very interesting to observe (feeding, swimming, general behavior) and are the most primitive bony fishes.--
