Product Review: SeaChem Purigen

A Quote from the seachem site

"Purigen™ is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%. Purigen™ controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen™ darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen™ is designed for both marine and freshwater use. This product is sold by volume. Cited weight is minimal weight."

If purigen removes these organic watse substances and thus prevents the formation of ammonia etc. Surley the removal of Purigen from the system could cause ammonia levels and nitrite levels to increase above those normally experianced and cause a mini cycle until the biofilter has 'caught up'.

Or am I missing something somewhere.......

I think the compounds that would release the waste would also be removed by removing the purigen pack. Any leftover compounds could release ammonia from a change in pH from a water change, such as ammonium to ammonia. Frequent water changes should minimize this effect.

I use it -it rocks my reef!
very effective and no your tank does not go thru a "mini cycle" I see you train of thought but any well established tank has so much bio diversity that it should not be a problem.
I use it every couple of weeks to extract what my other filters miss.
"Cats Meow" I have found no down side with this product.

H2OBoy - I agree with you. I dont think one would see any problem using it every couple of weeks for 24 or 48 hours. My worry is that if I use it continuously and then remove it in order to recharge it a mini cycle could occur. If the bio filter is used to a particular bioload with purigen in the system (which removes organic waste before it causes Ammonia,Nitrite etc) and the Purigen is removed, the bio filter could be overloaded with the additional waste.

Is there anyone who uses this product all the time who has checked water parameters when the product is removed?

I currently use polyfilet monthly and am thinking of switching to Purigen as it is rechargable and has great user reviews. I'm exploring this potentialproblem asI may decide to run the Purigen all the time instead of only monthly.

Thanks
Brian

I have used Purigen in a couple of tanks 24/7 for months and removed it without problems. Both of these tanks have huge sump filters with a lot of bio-media however. One tank has drip. The water parameters are checked regularly. I'm not saying it couldn't happen under the right conditions, it's just never happened to me.

I just bought the stuff today. I am curious to how it will work since nitrates are a pain in my butt! I hope it does wonders, and if it does, I will buy some more!

It works. I think you will appreciate it.

I hope so, it's already turning colors. I think I may have to buy another bag of it!

The color change is the harmful crap coming out of your tank. Glad to see some appreciate the product reviews.

Yea, I think I am going to go check it now. And I might get another bag for my salt tank at school.
