Nice to meet you Mrs.Dayak.

Your Husband is a lucky man having you interested in helping with this hobby.

As for filtration, imho having multiple filtering systems work best in my experience.

-I would do a decent size sump with filter socks for the mechanical filtration. Sumps have the room for loads of bio media also.

-Then possibly a fx5 or two for the extra filtration. If you have money to burn go for Eheim 2260/2262's(what I use and love).

You have over filtrated your systems in the past and so with these monster set up, its basically the same.

Mr. Dayak sure is lucky cause with a wife on board it is definitely easier to burn money with her approval. I am in the same boat so I guess I'm lucky but she does not do water changes. She does help with washing the filter socks in the laundry machine:grinno:(I have about 10x dual micron filter socks(50/100) and it is very easy to maintain fish with a good sump design)

If you need help with a sump system let me know. I have designed one in 2009 and would not change a thing about it.

The hell are you talking about? I couldn't see a filter in there so I simply asked if there was one or not. What kind of fool ignores potential mistakes and instead continues giving suggestions on top of that without correcting it first. :screwy:

This is one more example of what should be avoided if we want to keep MFK as it is, a wellcoming place for newcomers to the hobby.

Why would you presume that the tank was unfiltered?

Please people, especially with new hobbyists, if you have nothing nice to say, move on.

Feed it pellets. Why would you want to feed it a less nutritious and more expensive diet?

Exactly

Because it hates them. It's a predator, it wants to hunt! I feel bad for it, lol. A solid nutrition can't be created with variety live? Gut loaded crickets and what not? I see that the pellets are very desirable by us, but there seems to be so much trouble getting these fish to eat them. It seems traumatic for the fish owners as well as the fish, heh.

Sweet, bomber, thank you! Our budget is run dry for the tank for this month, though. Next month we can blow some more, and we'll prioritize filtration. Would love your feed back for that!

I did notice your HOB filter at the top right of your new tank. Is it an ac110?

Mrs. Dayak, you should give them both live and food stuffed with pellets. I stuff my Market shrimp with massivore for the extra nutrition. As for live food, I got nothing.

To be honest, what does this even have to do with being a new hobbyist? Why would i NOT suspect the tank was unfiltered if I was unable to see the HOB? Whether or not he's new or not isn't even relevant in this case. If I missed the HOB on the back, I would obviously ask to make sure as it doesn't hurt to confirm. If I was going to be a complete ass about it, I wouldn't have asked in such a casual way, or even asked at all.

Thank you, Gshock. It's nice to have so many experienced people looking out for us. Dayak added a sponge filter on the other side for now, and we'll expand in february. I can barely wait!!!
I am off now to research a bit more about feeding the fish :D
