Project albino hemibagrus!-)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very formative topic good info so far thanks learnt not to buy one lol unless i got fish i dont want

Great read there pal, thanks.
At what size did papilla become visible mate, quite curious on the gender.

TBH, I've never paid attention to my guy/gal's privates. I don't even know the gender of mine. I rarely pay attention to gender anyway of any of my fish, usually only if I have multiple specimen of the same species and need to make sense of their looks, differences, behaviors and interactions, or if I get a spawn in some accidental and miraculous way...

So I'm hoping you being keenly interested in this will educate us as you go, just be a gentleman and save his/her dignity... ;)

Lol, mainly so I can name it tbh!-)
Do you just have the one now? Has anyone bred hemibagrus in an aquarium? I'm guessing it's very possible with them being farmed an all.
T terrorG there is a really nice pimlodus ornatus at Wildwoods that's about 6 inch for £60, that would make a great addition to your GT tank.

I'd come up with a gender-neutral, non-human name :)

Yes, I've always had just that one.

I'm not aware of hobbyist breeding them or any Hemibagrus species for that matter. Usually fish appear to be bred 100% artificially at the farming operations but perhaps nemurus (having re-read the Cat-eLog I am not sure anymore on the spilopterus) is bred semi-naturally with the addition / injection of hormones and the following natural spawn, because I don't recall ever seeing a deformed nemurus. Deformity appears to abound when fertilization and incubation etc. are done in a petri dish like with TSN and TSNxRTC.

T terrorG sounds like it is hint-worthy to your close ones, given the proximity of Christmas...

I guess I will put in my two cents on the "nemurus" confusion.
Personally I see it as a simple case of mistaken identity, which is why TBTB's specimen only grew to about 12in.
and from what I've gathered there can only be two species that it could really be: H. peguensis and H. spilopterus
I tend to lean towards H. peguensis being the fake nemure as it has a similar bulky build to real nemurus
and both H. peguensis and H. spilopterus both attain a max size of 12-14in.
also very nice specimen Justarn. keep us updated

While I appreciate the analysis, I am skeptical about my guy being anything else but the farmed nemurus. It looks pretty typical and it is an albino, both of which argue that this is merely a farmed nemurus runt.

We know almost nothing apart from what's in Dr. Ng's revision about the new 29 Hemibagrus species but one thing is clear that none of them are farmed and albino almost never occur in the wild.

Finally, I have to find and reread my ID thread but IIRC, I think the consensus on PCF was that my guy is a nemurus.

If you have carefully read Dr. Heok Hee Ng's revision though, you know 100x more than me because I have not been able to take on it yet in part due to time and due to its enormous size.

Thanks everyone, this little guy is fast becoming a favourite, always out and about with the lights on, his/her belly is huge... what a greedy fish!-) the only fish I've had before that fed like this was rtc and channa micro!! Eating the tetras pellets aswell as all the goodies I fatten him up with before lol.
Seems to be so confident in comparison to the wyckii which found his cave and rarely even darted to for food.
Seems to have a very faint dark line around the adipose and a jagged dorsal ray due to in equal rays, can't make out any filament extensions yet... I need to count some rays and do some research when I get time.

Sounds just like my fish. No question in my mind we have the same fish.

Little update, it's been 2 months and he is about 5.5 inch so just over an inch a month.
Calmed down quite a lot now, hangs around alot but usually out in the open which is good.
Hasn't touched a single fish as far as I can tell, there are 2 emporer tetra that are about 25mm too...
