Yeah, very nice read. Could not make out the author. If Wolfgang Ros then I am not surprised. He is a star in the field of fish-keeping. Looks like exactly his style of writing. Excellent.

it also says about genital papilla!? i just checked my fish and if he has one its not out, couldnt find any hemibagrus papilla images on google. There is a circular bump that looks like it could extend? i have no clue on catfish sexing, do the male hemibagrus papilla retract and extend??? going on some of his other pointers, e.i darker black and sleeker shape i would think i have a male... just wanna know to name him/her correctly lol...

http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=94 says "Sexing Unknown, perhaps females are smaller and fuller."

Wolfgang studies his fish carefully so I don't know who is more likely right.

The papilla does not retract or extend IIRC.

Wiki: "In fish, the genital papilla is a small, fleshy tube behind the anus present in some fishes, from which the sperm or eggs are released; the sex of a fish often can be determined by the shape of its papilla."

Often yes, but far from always.

yeah i think it may be a lost cause trying to sex him/her... planet catfish and scotcat and just about every other lesser source say you cant sex em, odd how the other hemibagrus have the papilla tho!? im thinking at 15 inch he would be mature? guess i'll just carry on calling him a him lol.

TBTB, you have two dont you? notice and differences in those? what size are they? any pics?

Other species in the genus? Both sexes can have the papilla (see above - sperm or eggs), unless I misunderstand your comment. It is its shape that usually differs for the two sexes.

If I still had those and the 4 juvies, I'd spoke much more from my experience. They've been with me for a couple of years back in Rochester, NY. I lost them 3 years ago during our move to FL. You've seen my description of the two bigger ones before. They lived in a 4000 gal pond and almost never left their clay pots. I had very limited opportunity to study them or admire them.

The ARTC males have visible papilla also nemurus do but no one says anything about wyckii except the german guy... oh so you dont have any wyckii now? I will have a look back through your threads...

had some aggression in the last week, rocky has had a good few scales removed from his hump, a few cichlids have ripped anal fins and the suncat has a 5mm piece of his tail missing where the wyckii grabbed him and tryed to pull him in his cave...
