I like to use soy milk instead of water too (regular milk works, just higher saturated fat). The amount of soy you use will add an extra 6g of protein (yes, I know it's soy, but soy protein is still effective, just not as effective as whey).
QUOTE]

I tend to stay away from soy milk or soy products due to the debates back and forth over the isoflavones issue and most soybeans are genetically engineered.

I hear ya, especially on school camps

What's the benefits of protein when you're working out and stuff?

It's a waste of money for most people. You only need excess protein to build and maintain excess muscle.
The average Joe Football couch potato does not need it.
Your body will only absorb as much as it needs. The rest is converted to energy and fat and above that, pissed away. This is all very hard on certain organs (liver, kidney) that should not be asked to convert and expel protein.
The average human can only absorb a limited amount of protein at any one time.
Unless you are a top level athlete, not just a wanabe, skip it.
Eat some food.

Hmm, seems it'd be a waste of money for me too, not that I was planning on using it though. I was just thinking about it because soon I'm going to start training at the gym 2 times a week, and I have Rugby 3 times a week. I'll just stick to good ole' steak for protein, lol. *eats a raw t-bone every morning for breakfast* :D

ya, im only using it right now cause i cant get my pullup max up for ****... so im hitting about 60Grams extra a day and increasing my workout. although i didnt workout today and just did cardio yesterday. once the tub is gone, i probably wont buy another. by that time i should be in boot anyways.

add yogurt and frozen fruit. frozen fruit is cheaper than fresh, and its better for making smoothies.

if you are lifting heavily, trying to increase strength and muscle mass, you should take in 1 gram of protein per lb of your desired body weight per day.

You made some good points, protein supplements for the avg guy may be a waste of money. However for someone who wants to improve their health, they are a very cost effective way of increasing your daily protein intake w/o excess calories.( I don't know about your area have you seen the prices recently in your grocery store?) Protein supplements if you watch will run about .58 to .86 per serving, plus it conveinance and biological value (BV).

Chicken has a BV of around 79, the higher a protein's biological value (BV), the more nitrogen your body can absorb, use, and retain.

Whey protein has a BV of 100 and lower calories per serving so the bang per buck is again higher.

The body can only assimilate so much protein at one time, based upon your genetics and timing. Best times after workout, before bed (on empty stomach ) and when you wake up....

Protein is calories excess calories in your diet will make you fat.
People who are dieting however can benefit due to proteins ablity to balance your sugar levels between meals, keeping your metoblism and immunity systems up, .. So it's a nice supplement for people who are dieting or want to maintain their optimal health as well, not just athletes.

Your quote "This is all very hard on certain organs (liver, kidney) that should not be asked to convert and expel protein." that statement has never been proven , it's an urban myth. If you have normal functioning organs and are worried. Just drink more water.

i'd have to agree with spankbely, your muscles tend to retain water while on the shakes... i used Cell tech and nitro tech together they worked awesome! when i stoped using them i lost about ten pounds in mass... as long as you use them you're good. as far as flavors stay away from fruit punch and strawberry:barf:
choc is the way to go i used to put a bananna, 2heaping tablespoons of PB a few pieces of whatever fruit i had with a few cubes of ice. if it's kinda sour mix in a little honey.
on a more positive note what i found that worked just as good and took a whole lot less time is the creatine syrum a couple droppers down the hatch and you're done. flavors taste a H*** of a lot better.

I'm with spankbelly, supplements are a waste. I still have a protien shake when I work late and dont have time to cook before training, or If I've trained and eaten and still have that tired empty feeling... I get chocolate tropica and mix it with full cream milk. A good alternative is a pint cream with a couple of eggs, but that is more expensive lol. The best thing after a work out is a fish supper...dont beleive the supplement hype...just train hard and smart!

I agree with almost everything that has been said, but I still think that protein shakes aren't necessarily a waste of money for the average person. For someone who is beginning a workout program, protein shakes allow them to consume ample amounts of protein at minimal caloric cost, not to mention that the body uses energy to process protein.

I usually drink a shake post-workout when I'm too spent to cook. I've tried many brands and I like Pro-Complex the best. Tastes great, 60g protein per serving, plus it contains glutamine for joint repair and several other essential amino acids.
