It's a waste of money for most people. You only need excess protein to build and maintain excess muscle.
The average Joe Football couch potato does not need it.
Your body will only absorb as much as it needs. The rest is converted to energy and fat and above that, pissed away. This is all very hard on certain organs (liver, kidney) that should not be asked to convert and expel protein.
The average human can only absorb a limited amount of protein at any one time.
Unless you are a top level athlete, not just a wanabe, skip it.
Eat some food.
You made some good points, protein supplements for the avg guy may be a waste of money. However for someone who wants to improve their health, they are a very cost effective way of increasing your daily protein intake w/o excess calories.( I don't know about your area have you seen the prices recently in your grocery store?) Protein supplements if you watch will run about .58 to .86 per serving, plus it conveinance and biological value (BV).
Chicken has a BV of around 79, the higher a protein's biological value (BV), the more nitrogen your body can absorb, use, and retain.
Whey protein has a BV of 100 and lower calories per serving so the bang per buck is again higher.
The body can only assimilate so much protein at one time, based upon your genetics and timing. Best times after workout, before bed (on empty stomach ) and when you wake up....
Protein is calories excess calories in your diet will make you fat.
People who are dieting however can benefit due to proteins ablity to balance your sugar levels between meals, keeping your metoblism and immunity systems up, .. So it's a nice supplement for people who are dieting or want to maintain their optimal health as well, not just athletes.
Your quote "This is all very hard on certain organs (liver, kidney) that should not be asked to convert and expel protein." that statement has never been proven , it's an urban myth. If you have normal functioning organs and are worried. Just drink more water.
