okay, now for a uv sterilizer, i want one to go in my sump, dunno how cus i thought they need a pump, but could u give me some basic info on uv sterilizers? thanks!
Yes, Some say the a UV is kinda like having ozone on your tank. The UV kills free floating particles and makes your water "clearer". As far as brands again like skimmers you do get what u pay for. Now this if you like Mandarin dragonets then a UV may not be for you because it will kill "PODS" a dragonet main source of food. A UV will kill algae spores in the water. You will need to get one with a cleaner so that you can clean the lens internally. Another interesting fact about UV is that a small very minute ozone gas will for on the lens of the UV unit. This is very fine but hey it's a perk. A UV conversation will bring alot of debate and opinions. I will only try to post facts. Also a UV will help control disease in SW and fresh fish. You will not have a ich problem if u use a UV. So the option is yours. Most lower quality UV's will come with a pump but if they don't you will need one. Now here is another thing. There are HO and NO UV units. Some use a HO T-5 and some use a NO fluorescent. Try to buy a HO unit if you can. They have a more intense light per contact time. Now with the swirl units and straight through units. I have never read a advantage to either.
so since i will get one that is probably about 100$ to cover the size of my tank, I will need a pump? Can you recomend a skimmer for 120g tank + a pump for the uv? and owuld i just put both in the sump? thanks
oops, lol i know the skimmer. If I have calcium chemical, will that help to add it to the water to get the purple, green and other algea's grow faster? I can't afford purple up right now =/ and my live rocks don't look to pretty =(
Not really. You would need a balanced calcium. That means it is balance with your Alk and Mag. If everything is not balanced then nothing will grow. I will post a neat reef calculator link later. It will help with the balanced stuff.
