i think the discussion is about serious mfk'ers and people like that, not some rich guy who pays people to take care of a huge fish tank in their mansion

I was thinking the same thing when I read that. some rich guy pays people like us to set up and maintain a large tank so he can impress people with his living domestic ornament.

wouldn't that be a great job, setting up tanks in homes and businesses for people with huge budgets?

Have always been proud of this hobby. Has it ever made me popular...no. Do I care? no. I'm in it because I'm absolutely passionate about it, I absolutely LOVE this hobby. Noone can take that passion away from me.

well put peanut. all my friends i have around my house are always amazed by my fish. they admit that they either couldnt or wouldnt do it themselves, for various reasons, but seeing mine does make them reconsider their position on keeping fish. my step dad has even considered a small one in the flat my parents are in.
people going wow or even just looking at the fish for longer than a second makes me proud cos it means it has caught their eye.

I wouldnt really clasify fishkeeping as a nerdy hobby. people do what they enjoy be it bmx, remote control car racing or bodybuilding. Its the people that critisize what other people enjoy are the nerdy ones.

P.s. i ride bmx.

keeping the fish is about me.No one that lives near here is interested in the least.Am I a fish nerd oh yea Im sure since childhood.
It is kind of cool when people insist my tanks are saltwater because there aren any freshwater fish that colorful.:D

i sir am not a nerd.. quite the opposite actually.. i was in various social clubs in highschool which are not limited to, but include ; chess club, 1337 club, anime club, NHS, and computer something or other...

this post is a joke if you didn't catch the total sarcasm in my typing..
im a fish nerd at heart.. but still have a social life..

The hobby is a hobby and you do it because you enjoy it. Doesn’t really matter what others think unless they live with you and pay some of the bills or all the bills, then it might be a little difficult. Someone mentioned it already, it might be the discussion of the hobby that sounds nerdy, especially when you aren’t in front of an aquarium. People I talk to who are not familiar with aquariums or my fish, I usually mention something that contradicts the typically stereo type non-fish keepers have, like your into fish so you must have guppies and/or goldfish. I usually mentioned I have two fish that are just under 2 ft long (2x Black Aros that are around 22-23 inches) and grow to almost three feet in the wild. That typically breaks their stereo type thinking, if not I mention the total number of gallons I have. If they seem interested I keep chatting with them.

On a side note, I consider myself far from nerdy, I do most of all the landscaping in my home, have other hobbies besides fish (Home Theater, Digital Photography, and would like to get back into Mountain Biking, little bit of wood working since I built a couple aquarium stands).

Enjoy the hobby and pay no attention to the negative attention people have about the hobby.

... There are all different types of fishkeepers as there are types of fish....some people are intellects that keep fish, some are lawyers and doctors for relaxation from stressful jobs, some are sports people with a physical body and energy of a cougar.. some of us are just a kid learning how to care for our first pets..i think if you mix all the fish keepers together... you may find the only thing some of us have in common is fishkeeping... netherwords we are all different and yet the same... no labels just ordinary people with beginner to great to advanced fish keeping skills who enjoy the company of others who love fish and also enjoy all the other differences that bound us together...:D We are a mixed bag... which is what makes it even better...
