PS3 OR Xbox 360 SLIM

Back to the PS3/XBOX conversation....
Getting the ps3 will make the most sense in the long run. My xbox got stolen a few days ago but I'm probably going to replace it with the ps3. The biggest reason for me is because in case I don't play games as much in the next few years, or if they come out with new systems I will still have the ps3 that connects online for free to watch netflix etc... Once xbox upgrades, the 360 will be pretty much worthless unless you want to pay the $59 a year to watch netflix. Oh yea and blu ray.

Both consoles will be obsolete in the next few years. And don't bother racking up a massive blu-ray collection as its going to see one of the shortest shelf-life of any entertainment format in history.
Going by global sales/popularity PS3 brings up the rear behind 360 and both are miles behind wii.

Not all consoles, But these two consoles have been out for 5 years. That means they're near the end of their run. Next gen cant be too far away. Take a look at how long consoles usually run for and it certainly isn't 5 years!
As for blu-ray, ironically PS3 is helping lead to its demise by being able to watch content off the machine itself. As well as xbox360 with netflix combined with illegal downloading, PPV movies and itunes is slaughtering the DVD and blu-ray market. Just ask blockbuster how they're doing these days! Given the speed at which blockbuster went from booming to bankrupt says that the average consumer isn't going out and renting movies anymore. Why buy a clunky expensive scratch-able disc when I can get movies without leaving the house on my tv, ps3, xbox, computer, or phone?

The PS and PS2 both had 10 year lives. The earliest a new sony system is coming out ( according to a press release by the CEO) is 2013, but 2015 is more likely. Because of the cell processor the PS3 will still be a great gaming machine for years. It competes and beats intel's and AMD's latest 6 core processors in a lot of synthetic and real world benchmarks. The flaw of the PS3 is the 1 Gb of RAM/VRAM. But it is still enough for programmers to use for a few years. The cell processor's capabilities are just being touched on. With 3D, PS move and new technologies that aren't even official yet, the PS3 is only going to get better.
But the world is going to end in 2012 so it doesn't matter anyway.
