OK, if i've asked this before, I was drunk and forgot.

What about the other DOCs that are in your tank? Isnt nitrate just and indicator for the level of DOCs?

If it's not removing them, then you're basically getting a false reading.
I hear people raving about lower nitrates. That's cool, but who cares if it's not taking care of everything else?

Until I can get a good answer, I'm sticking to water changes.

I'm pretty sure that it is removing DOCs from the water. It is a resin that removes all sorts of chemicals. Atleast that is what SeaChem states. Dont get my wrong Rally, I'm still going to do water changes, but it is nice to know that a little bag has got your back and keeping things good!

I'm skeptical.
Everyone raves about it, but I cant even make myself look at it at the LFS.

Yeah, but you got the drip, you don't need to lower nitrates, you fortunate aqua-bastard.

The drip sounds like an STD, and if you have the drip you don't need Purigen. You can use it though, it can't hurt.

I think it's a fad, it's no miracle worker IMO. Is it worth the money? Pretty much.
I've noticed this hobby is alot like the PC hobby, every few months some new holy grail comes out that's everyone's dream.

Things I don't like:
Need way more then the lable states.
Needs recharged way more than the lable states.
People might think you can skimp on water changes because nitrates go down.
Isn't as effective as I'd like.
They don't disclose what it's limits are, what exactly it removes, and how well (like is done with carbon.)
It's chemical filtration.

Things I do like:
It's rechargable
Cheap and easy to recharge
Helps lower nitrates.
Fairly good value in the long run (I think. How many times can you recharge this stuff?)

People might think you can skimp on water changes because nitrates go down. I see it more as insurance, a "back up" in case something happens and you can't do a water change, and when you do a water change, how do you know that the water company/well hasn't changed chemistry since your last water change. I would say most of the stuff that Purigen pulls out will keep your tank chemistry stable.
Isn't as effective as I'd like.Nothing's perfect, but it's a lot better than Zeolite and Nitrazorb

It's chemical filtration.? I don't get this one

no one knows, but for the money, it's great. I have recharged each bag about 5 times each and they still go pure white when it's done

Is it the nitrates that are harmful, or are they just an indicator to what is?
This is getting more confusing..

Nitrates build up faster than any other compound so they are an indicator of when water changes should be done. If it makes you all feel better, here is what I sent to SeaChem

Hello All at SeaChem!

I have been using Purigen for close to two months and I love it. I reccomend it to everyone one of my customers and to members on MonsterFishKeepers.com. What those members and I have been wondering is, what all does Purigen remove. We love it because it removes nitrates, but we want to know what other compounds are removed by the Purigen. We also would love to know if Purigen ever "wears out" after normal recharging. In my tank, I only use Prime and Clarity (when the water gets messy) so I am not worried about fouling the Purigen. Will it last indefinatly? I am speaking, not only for myself, but for many others when I say that Purigen, Prime, Clarity, and your other products are great. As fish keepers, we realize how important quality products are to our hobby. If you could, could you please send me a list of known compounds removed by Purigen and its life expectancy, if it has one.

Thank you,

Radley Miller

Hey Radley
I think it's common for newer/uninformed people to overstock and not change water accordingly. Unfortunatly I think those types of people make up the bulk of fish keepers. That 100ml per 100gal for 6 months seems a huge stretch, maybe even misleading.

I have the same view, it's not there to pick up slack but hopefully keep the water just a little cleaner for the fish (which it does.)

I've not used either of those two products, but I have to wonder if they had alot of hype behind them when the technology in them came to market.
I'm not a fan of chemical filtration, call me a naturalist. I generaly feel all ya need is dechlorinator and ferts for plants. I don't even run carbon unless I'm removing meds or we had rain recently.

Great E-mail, hopefully we don't get a cut and paste answer or some off the label sales pitch.

My water is crystal clear after using it.

Therefore I love it.

I will continue to do waterchanges.
