Alright dude, calm down. Perhaps you didn't read post #8.
Bluegills comes in different colors as well. All we need is a picture of the purple sunfish.

I'm with MN_Rebel. Picture is worth a thousand words. Can't really argue about what it is until we see it.
Personally, I've never seen sunnies other than bluegills be truly purple. Just for reference here are a few out of my pond:
Some are straight up purple. Some aren't. Look at the last picture - you can see purple on the sides, but that orange breast that was mentioned by the OP.

I'll be getting pictures of the "purple" sunfish on Friday....until then I'm enjoying the pictures of all these other sunfish! I'm going to bring a specimen container with me to see if I can get a shot of the fish in water too. They really were the nicest looking sunfish I've ever seen. They were really clean and healthy looking. How do I find out if its legal for me to take one home to put in my aquarium? I tried the state websites but there was no mention about keeping the fish....

So I called and it looks like I can legally take one(one more) to keep in my tanks! Yay! I'll be going on friday. Any pointers on how to transport them home? I was thinking of just bringing large bags and doing it that way....

Depends on how far. If your vehicle has an inverter stick an airstone in a 5 gallon bucket with it. I work from my vehicles so inverters are essential, they can also be picked up for around 20 bucks, always handy. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1332354749.618859.jpg
