Recently I lost my 4 and a half year old Esox Niger randomly and now have an empty 300 gallon aquarium, my dimensions are 96x30x24 and I was wondering if you guys feel that this would be a decent size for an Armatus? I haven't ventured into keeping tropical fish in a while and have always liked the Payara. I know they can get quite large but it seems it's rare for them to get much larger than 24+ in the home aquarium.

I guess what I'm looking for is to see if you guys think with my footprint if I would be able to house an Armatus if not for life then at least a long while? I don't like really going for fish that I can't provide for for life and if my tank isn't sufficient should I just get 5-6 Tats? If I do go with an Armatus it will likely be the only fish in the tank except for maybe some small dithers like silver dollars, or tetras.

If this isn't something that I can realistically do then I'll probably just end up with a jardini or something along those lines.

that's a tank fit for monsters! i would do 3 baby armatus to growout together. That way, they can tolerate each other in the future.

Or i'll do 5 to 7 tats.

I just couldn't see doing 3 armatus together, what with all the horror stories of them fighting constantly and them being so iffy when it comes to their personality and them tolerating other fish. Not to mention that I am already kinda concerned about having enough space for one of these monsters let alone 3. I really like my tank but I am starting to kick myself in the ass for not ordering it in 96x36, I started to feel my chain pickerel was getting cramped at 28 inches but then again he never really moved unless he was feeding. I guess it's not much of an issue now since he is gone but I still feel like I would have benefited more by going just a little wider.

That tank should be good for an armatus or a group of tats,or both.

You guys don't think it's going to be a problem with the slow growing nature of the Tats and the eventual size difference with the Armatus eclipsing the tats by quite a bit?

That's a valid concern. When I had my group they were not together long enough for size to be an issue.

Yeah that might be a problem then because ultimately I would prefer to keep the fish for life preferably and don't wanna see the poor tats get gobbled up after the first year or so.

I think if you were going to go that route, you'd be best served finding larger tats (say 8-12") and a smaller armatus. Not so small that they'd eat/kill him, but that they could at least keep up with him growth wise. I do think your tank is large enough for an armatus, to answer your original question.
