questions on my flowerhorn..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just trying to figure out what kind of fish i have and if i should add him to my community tank or rehome him. he was given to me so it wasnt like i went in and picked him out like i did my fh the day i saw a video of someone with a fh i instantly became obsessed and wanted one ever since. i’m in love with my fh and i want nothing but the best for him so if that means rehoming the other id hate to do so bc i’ve become to love all my scale babies but my fh is my favorite by far.

RD. RD. Can I get a second opinion on the ID of this cichlid aside to the fh in this thread. Looks to be clearly of the amphilophus genus most likely a middevil but someone is trying to argue that it is a aulonocara red dragon cichlid. Just want clarify for the op.

Well what size are both of your tanks and what are stocked in them?

it’s a 40 tall it’s in now with the fh. the community tank is also a 40 with 2 blood parrots 2 electric blue acaras 2 german blue rams and 4 small green cory cats.

Do have any plans of upgrading or considered the difference in water perimeters these different species need? The “mystery cichlid” or red devil will eventually need a 75 gallon to itself minimum getting 12-15 inches. Same goes for the fh 10-12 inches. The blood parrots also get pretty large I would expect them to get atleast 6-8 inches but they could get bigger. Whatever this mystery cichlid is red devil or aulonocara red dragon no matter the perimeters which is harder water higher ph while the South Americans you have in the other 40 need perimeters of quite the opposite. The blood parrots also being Central American do not fit the same perimeters of the South Americans. As the red devil and flowerhorn will reach close to their to their adult sizes in about a year you will to rehome some fish and upgrade your tanks.

i’ve got a 55 gallon i’m in the process of redoing, and haven’t decided what’s going in there yet. ive got 5 tanks up and running and if you have more than one tank you understand how costly they are. all my tanks stay at ph of 7.6-7.8 and the temps at 78-81 depending on which tank you ask about.

i’m very interested to see what RD. RD. has to say. i’m assuming he has red devils bc his username by i could be wrong haha

He may own some RDs. I’m not actually sure. I just know he is well versed with cichlids in general. You can learn a lot from him. I can assure it is an amphilophus/RD. That’s not hard to tell. It doesn’t resemble the red dragon blood cichlids at all to me yet is going through the fading process in Red Devils!

Cichlids are very adaptable so the South Americans the blood parrot could work but I’d be worried about the rams and bp’s in the future. I understand the tanks are costly that just means if you can’t provide enough tank space then you have to rehome some fish.

My user name RD actually stands for the city that I live in, Red Deer. lol But I have owned Amphs, and hybrid crosses, and currently own a male A. citrinellus that is close to 7 yrs old. The fish looks like a juvenile Amphilophus to me, but I'm not that confident when guessing species, especially potential hybrid crosses.
