Quick Question on Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Umbee's might be an option for you. I hear that they can definitely take care of themselves and reach similar lengths as the Dovii. They are just a notch below the Dovii on the aggression scale and a great looking fish.

A 300 gallon tank isnt large enough to house a full grown male dovii and a full grown male umbee. One would almost certainly kill the other.

Currently though he has a 125. If he were to introduce an umbee that was a similar size to his dovii, the umbee would likely be killed. Umbee can be fragile when young.

I think that someone reccomended fish from the Crenicichla group? That is bad advice. Pike cichlids are not physically equiped to stand up to a dovii. The only pikes that comes are the strigata sp, but they are difficult to find.

thank you for all the responses. I'll just have him alone. I don't like when i come home and see a dead fish, it makes me feel bad for having the fish die on me.

Thank you guys

a solo male is still awesome. he will become an absolute glass banger as he gets bigger.

keep us posted...

Agreed.

i have a dovii and my dovii is 4.5" long and it killed my 5in green terror and my 5in jag female and my 9" jag male ...they was a mating pair i am also in modesto try and message me through here and i ll give you my email address
i have a 7-8" long red devil and a 10" jack dempsey in my 100 gallon im trying to get rid of....

Heres an idea you might like! Keep him solo for now in the 125. Set up the 300 gallon let it cycle-then add different schools of Silver Dollars-Regular, Red Hook, Spotted, and Black Line-by the time hes ready to be moved the SDs will be comfy and the set up will look great. You may still lose a fish or two but some will live and the tank will look full. I really dont think you can add another cichlid-they tend to go after eachother and leave non-cichlids alone.

I have a 8" dovii now.....he also killed all the other fish he grew up with....and he's currently living the single life! I wouldn't dare put another fish in there because it would be a brutal but exciting to watch him smash on other fish......lol

Like I said if the SDs are put in the 300 gallon first they will have a chance to grow and thrive. Then after a few months or when the Dovii outgrows the 125 he can put it with the SDs-not saying it will 100% work but very good chance. I had a single Umbee that killed everything. With my SDs it would chase them away but never go as far as killing them.

I have read they coexist in the wild with Nicuarguense. I have also heard of someone keeping both im a mixed tank. Is it a bare bottom tank? If you got it landscaped take the dovii out and rearrange the living quarters, then try again, ....maybe. Remember Dovii's are , well , Doviis! Mine happened to be creampuffs, but you might have to accept the fact that he is a miserable SOB and love him for that. :)
