Quietest and longest lasting out hang on side filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of the noise coming from filters is due to lack of maintenance. Beside rinsing the mechanical media, I find the impeller shaft and impellers themselves need to be rinsed and brushed out. Tiny pieces of grit end up clinging and these can cause noise, and prematurely shorten their usable life.

Imo, the marineland emperor and penguin hobs are much quieter than the ac110, but are just nowhere near as effective. Ac110 is superior in almost every category except for noise.

But since your tank is smaller, and if you are not stocked very heavily, the marinelands may work very well for you. They are also fairly reliable, and easy to clean ime.

Like the others said, proper maintenance is the key to ensuring hobs stay quiet though. That and keeping sand out of the motor.

I have a 10 inch lungfish in it. Do u think it will be fine?

I’d say just get a small cannister filter and set it on some foam

I only have one, it's a marineland penguin 350. I run all coarse sponge and ceramic rings inside, with a coarse intake sponge. IMO its extremely quiet. You do hear a small trickling water sounds from the returns, but the filter itself is near silent.
