Quite possibly the worst LFS ever

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is a horrible story! What horrible people! You go there hoping to give your fish a better life and then that!

I've given fish to one lFS here and I had always assumed he does a good job with them - I hope that its like this case!

Really sorry to hear about your experience, but at least you have a few home with you and they have a far better chance of surviving now.

Good luck and let us know how they do...

Well, they all survived the night. The Scats even ate last night which I was amazed by. I still the the Archer is a gonner though. He looks like a zombie just sitting in the corner blank and stressed.

Well glad to hear that at least some of them are doing better...

give the Archer some time, seems like he's had quite the ordeal so he might just need some time to get over it all.

see this is why i couldn't imagine taking one of my fish to the lfs.

The other day we were in our closest petsmart and were getting a couple plecos. we walked by where they have the red oscars and.....I couldn't believ what i saw. This was not the place I got my oscars from and obviouly these people have zero experience with agressive fish.

There were 6 5-6" oscars in one 20g divider, close quarters by any means. And they were beaten to hell. one had half on his left gills biten off most had chunks out of their sides and they were braely floating on what they had left of their fins.

I inquire what the hell happened and the girl says there were two tiger oscars in there previously both about 9". Now let me get this straight you put 6 red oscars together in a 20g divider? then you put in 2 much larger tiger oscars and thought this was a good idea? apparently the tigers had just been purchased and they were seeing what they could do for the others. ridiculous! I mean seriously it's ridiculous how small of tanks they keep their fish in at the chain stores. and doing it with aggressive fish is idiocy.

I didn't know what to do, I obviously don't have the space for 6 oscars (well I could put them in the pond but that would only be until the weather got colder the pond is currently tropical temperature and the plecos are loving it lol) but I couldn't help but think their fate was sealed if they stayed there. I called one of my buddies and with a 500g setup and he got them for 5$ a pop. ( i didn't ask how he convinced them to sell injured fish) they seemed okay in his 75g hospital but he's worried about the gill injury on one of them.

it's one thing for a first timer to make these mistakes, it's soemthign compeltely different when the one selling the fish and offeirng advice to others does them.

@ the op I hope the survivors of tha attack make it and I'd suggest looking for another member here nearby you with a good setup or a friend in the hobby to give your fish to next time, the lfs obviously doesn't knwo what they're doing.

sorry for your loss! but i would have kicked some butt and got some NEW fish to bring home!!

OMG thats awful!
iv been away for 3 weeks an gave my fish to my lfs to look after. i told them my male FH woul nee his own tank as he will kill anything in with him in a matter of mins.
well i go in the next day and hes in with some plecs, i told them i will not be responsible for what happens to them as i have warned u and specifically booked his own tank over 4 months ago.

went in yest when i got back and he 'died' and there were no plecs either. i looked in the other tank and all i could see was my female fh, venustus and featherfin cat.....i had 17 fish in that tank that all like to show off. but when i asked the bloke didnt no where they were or what happened.

really annoyed about that and can kinda feel ur pain with that.
sorry for ur losses :(

The sad thing is, I would expect this sort of thing from a Petsmart type place. This, however, was supposed to be the most reputable store around. These guys had 10,000 gallons of water in that place and couldn't find a safe place to put the fish? Then they give me all the B.S., you just can't trust people. I think my surviving Archer at the very least will lose an eye. It's just a shame to put so much time and effort and care into something, just to watch someone else destroy it.

BTW Yogurt, I hear you on the Petsmart Oscars. Every single one in my local store has a horrible case of hole in the head and they act as if nothing is wrong with them and continue to sell them.
