No one can or will export many of them.

It wouldn't be easy, but certainly not impossible.

I will take my rio nanay mono over the envia lake monos any day :)

Yes, but it'd be very difficult. Cichla Mirianae for example, come from Brazil. More specifically, "upper Rio Tapajos drainage (Juruena and Teles Pires rivers) and the mid and upper Xingu (Fresco, Batovi, Culuene and Suia-Missu rivers."

As you may know, IBAMA bans the export of many fish from Brazilian waters. IBAMA puts out a list of species approved (not banned) from export. Any species not on the list cannot be legally exported. As you'll see from the links below, cichla are not mentioned on any of the 'approved' lists. But, it's not impossible as you have seen. Because it's no secret that there are Fogo in the hands of some collectors in Asia.

Lists of species allowed

According to IBAMA IN No 203/2008 is allowed to trade with ornamental extraction of 8 genera and 171 species of fish whole of continental waters. By "open" these genera has a total of over 450 species described and among non-scientifically described. There is not any kind of quota or quantity restrictions for these animals.

For the marine fish IN IBAMA No 202/2008 allows the capture, with ornamental purposes, of 136 species, all with export quota, but no quantity restrictions on internal trade

WHY DOES NOT IBAMA LISTS OF SPECIES PROHIBITED (negative list) INSTEAD OF MAKING LISTS OF SPECIES ALLOWED (positive list)?

Brazil has the greatest diversity of fish in inland waters in the world with over 2,500 species recorded, and numerous undescribed species or unknown to the scientific community, pointing to estimates that only Brazilian continental waters there are approximately 5,000 species. Many of these species generate interest for the aquarium market. For marine fish estimated to have over 1300 espécies.Muitas these species are still unknown to science.

When you make a negative list, is saying that all other species, including unknown, may be fished.

Many of the unknown species are rare or just because they have a different biology, and even among the known species lack studies to support or not to ban them.

The use of lists of prohibition, although it may facilitate the monitoring and control, is not consistent with the mission of IBAMA to protect biodiversity.

List of species of aquatic animals threatened with extinction

The official list of endangered aquatic animals is the responsibility of the Permanent Technical Chamber of Endangered Species and National Committee of overexploited Biodiversiade - CONABIO, the Ministry of Environment. The current list was made official by Instruction No. 05/2004 MMA and is listed in full in its Annex I.

Once they're out of Brazil then it's open game really. As fishkeepers, we're governed by laws in the US. So while the fish may be illegal to export from Brazil, there's nothing that says they're illegal to keep in the US. So there is no issues with us keeping them. But if you get caught trying to smuggle them out of Brazil, God help you :)

haha soo all thats gota happen is someone needs to get like 10 fogos take them to the US and breed those bad boys.
