Ray breathing problems...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish I could be more help man. Have you eliminated food as a possibility? Do you use a chemical for chlorimine? Copper present? Added bacteria? Allready salted?

I know they're kinda dumb questions but never hurts to ask...

It really sucks dealing with rays in this aspect. Good luck! Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it!

Prime (deals with chlorine and chloramine) helps with the slime coat and salt ...

You said you have a lot of O2, airstones? Since we're talking about a 450gal tank here water movement if of the essence. I'd get at least 4 x AQ110 powerheads (they a venturi enabled) and once they are on you can add and air tube to them as well. You need that water to move around a lot more. Position those powerheads in such way that it creates a current all around the tank, 2-3 powerheads at the top left BACK corner and 2-3 powerheads at the top right FRONT corner for example. Oh, and make sure those powerheads have the FILTER ATTACHMENTS, you don't want any fishy parts to get stuck in there.

My guess is it's only the O2 issue, since once they were in the QT tank they were breathing normally.

Good luck, keep us updated.

thanks for the replies guys! i have not tested for copper....

i have tried salt, bacteria, stress coat, water changes.... its not the food since some only eat certain foods and everyone is getting it...

i have plenty of o2 and flow...my rays can barely sit still i have so much current...

this is exactly what happened... i have a 450 and the 50 pup tank on the same sump. i took the pups out and put them in the 140 2 weeks ago. then the 2 leos started getting sick, so i took them out and put them in the 140 with the pups. now the leos are still sick but the pups they r with are still fine... after i took the leos out of the 450, my other motoros in the 450 started getting sick...

with all this, im thinkin its something in the 450 and effected everyone in that tank.

so why havent my leos started eating yet since the pups they r with are eating and acting normal?

Ummmm wierd....

Could you unknowingly be putting something in your tank thats untestable?

Example - Cologne from your wrists? Deodorant during your cleanings? Any residual agents like soap, etc. on your hands?

Perhaps, try to decontaminate everything that comes into contact with your tank, even if you think its safe!

That sucks man sorry to hear, what about the amount of bb in your 450 was it possibly not enough for that huge bioload?, and it sent your tank into a mini cycle, so maybe they got a little ammonia poisoning.

I still think it sounds stress related. Sounds like a lot of moving around to me.

Still wondering about the Chloramine...... Do you use a chemical to break the bond?

If it's isolated to the 450 I'de lean towards the bio issue..... BUT if you added bacteria that should have replenished it enough.

The reason I asked about food..... Does the food they eat get handled by the people at the counter? Or do you buy allready bagged stuff? I've heard horror stories of slow contamination at the hands of food service employees.
