im deciding between a ray or a lima.

my stock list idea is:

1x silver aro
1x florida gar
2x pbass
3x bichir (maybe 2x if need be)

and then either a ray or a lima shovel nose

tank is a 225 gallon, 72" x 24"w x 30"
if ray .. what kind would you guys suggest for this stock list and tank size? (i also plan to have at least some of the tank with stuff in it, not positive live of fake plants yet but deffinatly some rocks and bit of driftwood etc so keep that in mind)

also money is a factor .. what you guys think?

tank is too small for the bigger rays..
go for a flower.. hystrix or scobina

i get the feeling im going to get alot of people saying ray instead. i dont know species of rays much. main thing is need to keep the cost down!

go for a hystrix or motoro. they arent as expensive as some others. You have a big tank and limas are so common and much less interesting.

yah. i was convinced on getting one since i started with this tank but really started thinking today a ray might be way more interesting and fun to learn about. so how big do these species get? how much room should be left in the decorations etc on the bottom for them? i dont want to go with just a sand bottom so if thats the case i might stick with the lima.

If you plan on keeping a ray in that tank for a long time i'd go for Hystrix, they stay smaller and grow slow. You could keep them in that tank for a few years easy..

add a ray to add something unique in your set up. lima's dont have the wow-factor of a ray. you know it makes sense.

yah .. ive pretty much decided im going to do a ray instead .. only thing i need to figure out now is i need help with how much space needs to be left open etc in the set-up for him? and guarenteed a ray will get along with my other tank mates i have listed? mainly the space thing. need to figure that out so he has room but also dont want a bare tank

your ray should be fine with your current stock. i kept mine with flagtails, arowana and oscars. never had any problems.
just keep an eye out for your polyterus. he may nibble at rays side's.
best wishes
