Ray Tankmates - Diamond Sturgeon??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Only because you said "please" :)

Why would the sturgeons starve?? I feed my rays pellets. I would now throw in extra pellets for the added fish. These sturgeon will be able to eat. That's a non-issue IMO.

And, I've addressed the temperature issue. Both are eating ravenously at the same temp - room temperature plus equipment heat (~79 F)

It just won't work.
Sturgeon need cooler water and they WILL starve.
Please don't do this..

While temps could possibly be an issue, if people would do some research before posting they would see that this sturgeon reaches appx 1.25m in a POND and are very slow growers. Many of us keep fish that reach potenial sizes just as large. As for as temps they tolerate temps up to 25c=77f, I keep my rays at 76-77 so while it might be on the high end I believe it is possible as long as they can tolerate each other temperment wise.
GL and I would at least try it.

Why do some people insist on turning every thread into a controversy?? Are you T1's twin brother?? LOL

Seriously though... have you ever kept an arowana, RTC, clown knife, GATF, or any other monster species?? If so, I really hope you have a giant pond or lake that you're raising them in. Otherwise, I consider you irresponsible and a hypocrite :) NOW, GET OFF MY THREAD lmao!!!!!

Anyone else have an actual opinion on keeping sturgeon with rays??

^i agree

Try it. A lot of the hobby is trial and error. Just because it hasent been done doesn't mean that it can't.

If it doesnt work ill help you dig a pond bro. Lol. Looking good. Btw to people saying stuff about size you really dont know peter and his commitment to fish, no tank is too big for him

Very reminiscent of me looking for info in regards to housing rays and Aimaras together.

If the masses were right the rays would have been eyeless, tail less, and who knows what else. I was told Aimara would destroy anything that moves in a tank.

IF I was right the Aimara is just another chewtoy for the untrustable flatfish.

Despite both outcomes I gave it a go. After about 2 weeks the Aimara was removed after getting roughed up. Just too much of a risk.

Moral of the story...... Never gonna know till you try. Just be prepared for either outcome.

Just curious are there records out there of people successfully keeping these Sturgeon at the same temp you're keeping them at?

I had my sturgeon in with my hystrix for a little while.. My sturgeon has always lived in a warmer environment. As long as you have good oxygen and circulation, it will be fine .. But as for being good tank mates, they are not. My sturgeon would swim at the bottom and constantly bump the stingray. the boney plates on the sturgeon can easily cause damage to the stingray. I had to remove my sturgeon and put him in my pond outside, after slowly acclimating it into the temperature change in a separate tank. I wouldn't recommend leaving the 2 together

Bit optimistic saying they reach 1.25 m in a pond.. I live in Germany where sturgeon are quite polular and I've seen them grow well over 1.60m..
And you can't compare them to typical big-growing aquarium fish we keep, since they are constant and quick swimmers..only fish you could compare them to are Paroon sharks IMHO.
I'm not saying you can't try it but you really shouldn't.

I have done a lot of research on this and have experience with both rays and sturgeon, but not together-yet. Sturgeon are extremely peaceful and active. They should be able to do just fine acquiring enough food-hypothetically. The water temp is the biggest issue as well as possible damage due to the tougher outer cartilage. Max temp for a sturgeon is about 78F and will need extra oxygenation at that level. Please keep us updated!
