Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow they're beautiful... those pups of hers will be gorgeous

Any chance we can get an update w/ pics on your full setup? Know it was asked a long time ago. Wouldn't mind some pics! (and congrats on the new leo)

I know...I keep saying I'll do that, but really there hasn't been a lot of change lately other than livestock. I keep wanting to wait until I fire up the 2nd pond...and that is coming VERY soon.

Most of the upgrades I've done lately are simply moving Tilapia around to try and get them to breed more efficiently...and upgrading my shipping process to make for better and safer acclimation. 2200+ fry went out monday with a very small loss percentage, so things are really looking good there.

But I do promise to update and re-summarize everything soon.

Glad to hear about your revised shipping methods

A bit down today...For some reason, a circuit breaker popped in the night and as a result, about 3 or 4 thousand Tilapia eggs died. I knew I was going to need an upgrade on the electrical panel, but I havn't plugged in anything new lately.

For now, the hatchery tank is getting moved to the kitchen...so I get to hear my wife complain... Oh well.

Could be that storm that rolled through last night. How much power does it take to keep the hatchery tank going? Is it something you could put a battery backup on? I have some UPS backups that I got to use for a home project, I could spare one if you want it you can have it. Not sure how long the battery in it would power your tank, but you could wire a car battery or deep cycle to it to get a lot longer run time. You could even put 2 or more in parallel to get as much run time as you wanted.

It happened the night before last, I bet it was just all the heaters kicked on at the same time or something...

I have one of those UPS's too. I have it on the Ray pump, but the battery only lasts about a minute there, so I might as well move it over. The critical thing on the hatchery tank is the air pump that makes the tumblers work...

I could plug a few things in differently down there, but I really don't want any more extension cords running around right now.

I'll just keep it in the kitchen for now while I decide what to do long-term.

that sucks man, i still have yet to figure out a solution to the power outtage problem, i got kinda worried last night when my power went out and all water movement in my 125 stopped. I was real worried about losing my 12in RTC, especially since he had just taken a msaaive dump and i know there would be an ammonia spike.

Hey Clearwater guy.. I have a bunch of battery powered airstone pumps, that they use for bait... Keep a stock of D cell batteries for them.. These are a life saver if you lose power. Just a thought.. I think anyone who has a sizable investment in fish lifestock should have some.

Or you could get a power inverter.. I don't know the details, but I believe it lets you use a car battery to run your normal 120V heaters, etc.
