Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, here are the pics of the first pool, and the revised filtration system. I have taken the Barrel out of service for now, but will add back in later for the upper level of pools to drain through. Once I got the lower level filled, I got it up to within a couple degrees of the other 2 tanks, then I simply cut the drain pipe under the upper tank, and moved the pump from the barrel to the new sump. This is temporary...The pumps I have ordered are not here yet, nor is the 800w heater I ordered. When the pumps come, I'll use some valves to adjust the flow between the tanks, I'll only need one pump running at first, but when I get the other pools in, it will get more elaborate.

So- looking at the pool and the tank from where the pictures are taken, the lower pool drains out on the left front of the tank using a bulkead through the plywood and liner, and a 2" pvc tube for the overflow. It drains out to the left, and makes a 90 degree right turn through the furnace room, then it makes another right turn to the sumps. The pool is on a 10" tall platform to allow the gravity to work. The tubs are 50 gallons each, but I'm only running them half full right now, maybe 3/4 full once I get them braced and tested better.

When I get the other stack of pools done, both upper level pools will flow through an identical system, but one shelf higher. Then both sump levels will flow into the barrel which will be the pump-house, and contain the auto-fill and auto water change stuff just as it does now.

So, basically, it's going to be a 4 tub series-parallel bi-level filter system with common pump-house. I like it cuz it sounds really complicated....but really it is simple, and it gets everything totally out of the way and makes best use of the small fish room. This way, all four pools are combined, but the separate filterbed levels will slow the water flow through each level of lava rock before the water combines in the barrel. Everything in drain and tubs is 2", so I'm hoping it will be enough to allow enough flow. We'll see. I'm looking for an actual flow around 3000gph through each filterbed. I think it will work as long as I set it up correctly. If not, I can add another branch. There's still room next to the furnace, which is why I wanted it back there anyhow, so there's lots of room to expand the biofilter capacity. Eventually, I intend to upgrade to something better than tubs. But $40 for 2 tubs, and $12 worth of Lava rock is a start that saves me enough money to go pick up a Ray tomorrow at the airport. I like that.

In the meantime, I still have another 20 gallons of Lava rock to wash, and some plastic dividers to make and such to get the filterbed working to it's potential.

Also, since I have combined these to make it easier to move rays between pools, I now need to make a quarantine tank. There is room now on the RH side of the pool where the barrel originally was. I think about 40" x 40" should be sufficient for my uses.

rays look good keep up the good work. I would suggest adding more bio media. Specially if you are going to be adding more rays. I use sponges in my tanks. I was able to get them at the dollar store, or Zennico (sp?) a member on mfk sells them.

I'm glad you mentioned that, actually!

I already have another 20 gallons of Lavarock, but I just havn't had a chance to clean it and put it in yet. I intend to raise the water level in the tubs once they are proven to be safe and leak free as well, and there are some vent holes there around the handles in the tubs that need a dab of silicone as well. But I was impressed how well the tubs fit in there...that was a pre-existing shelf, and the fit perfect and even allowed the 2 x 2 to be slid in there to keep the tubs from bulging.

The sponges would be a perfect add for the second tub to give a finer filtration. SO, I'll fill the first half with lava rock, and then put in about a cubic foot of sponges.

So, those tubs will have approximately a total of 4 cubic feet of media that has water flowing through it.

And then, at what point will that NOT be adequate? Will that 4 cubic feet be good for 2 pools with 3-5 rays each? (rather, will it be enough media for 1000 gallons with up to 10 rays?) Because that is what I was hoping. So there would be another 4 cubic feet of media put in once the other pools are finished.

Does it matter what type of sponge?

Excellent story and I am very interested in following how you make out. I love stinrays and am very interested in your oxigenator.

Thanks for following! I think I'm a little overbudget, so the Oxygen concentrator may have to wait a bit. It's fine, because I won't be to the point of needing it for several months and my lotto numbers are going to hit by then for sure! LOL.

The Oxygen concentrators I am looking at are made by Ozotech. I was looking at the 3liter powerprep model (about $1100), but I'm thinking I want the 5 liter model instead, and I don't have a quote on that one. Ozotech has a PDF of their catalog online...they make a lot of really nice stuff.

They are designed to prep the air for ozone... but I'm gonna be DIY on the ozone generator, they are super-easy to build.

As far as if 4 cubic feet of bio media will be enough I can not answer that since I dont know the waste of sting rays. Dont have any yet and the ones they sell in my price range right now get to big for the 220 I am resealing. As far as sponges there are the nylon ones that I use. just make sure they done have soap already in the scrubby. The only other thing is when the budget is better I would build a better support for the tubs to prevent the bowing. dont want the electric to go out and have several gals of water fall on the floor.

Today was a long day...I won't get into the details, but it ended GREAT.

2 new tankmates and a polarized filter for the camera...

Very nice!

nice pickup on the leo!!

i didnt read the thread but good luck w everything.

Thanks man! The Leo came as a result of not putting glass on the front of the pools, and a few other things I trimmed out of the budget, or put off till a later date.

First things first... right? I just didn't see any way around the main requirement of genetic investments.

Well, today I really would have liked to sleep in. But I missed a whole afternoon of work here yesterday, so it's all here waiting....

I did get the first 150 gallon up and running the other day in-between other things...And I guess I can give an overview of the whole room. As a lot of basements do, this went from a hobby room, to a junk room...And I'm working around it all waiting for my kid to clean it out (I "hired" him).

I have another 150 Gal to put above the first 150, and where the workbench is located will be 2 more pools. Then the large Tilapia tank in the center. The room will be fairly cozy when it's done, but there will be plenty of room to move around them all.
