Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He died, when I came home from dinner he was gliding arouund banging into the walls and slowly being pushed around the tank, w minutes later he was throwing out death curls, then he was gone. HOT has a48 hour gauruntee on all freshwater fish so I may see if I can get my money bak, but im still reeally upset about the loss. Im really considering just hanging up the ray game

That's such a bummer. He was a nice looking pup.

But I lost 5...so you aren't allowed to give up so quickly.

Check your water params, and try to identify the cause of death. The RTC and any larger rays will be far more tolerant to the nitrogen cycle and all those other things.

Also, the pet store should not have been giving it feeders unless they were quarantined guppies or something like that...but if they were giving it goldfish, then that's a no-no.

If your water parameters are in check, its very possible it could have been internal parasites.

Checking the params was the first thing I did and all read 0 or close to it, and yea the pet store was feeding goldfish, they even had one in there when I bought him. You think parasites would have killed him that fast? I thought it took a little longer

Back to my own viscious cycle of failures...For every problem encountered, every lesson learned, and each of their solutions, there remains a long road of potential hazards yet to be forseen and prevented.

I broke my record for production and shipped 3300 fry and 200 1" fingerlings on Monday... Due to the inability of my shipping department to manage the process of counting and acclimating them all into shipping water and then into the bags, 80% or more of the fry arrived DOA.

My shipping department consists of me hogging the kitchen all day while I do all this myself.

It won't take more than about $50 to set it up properly for next time and beyond...mainly I just need bigger bags so I can count them all into one heated/aerated container instead of counting them into a whole bunch of open trays. It took so long that the individual containers all got too cold and then warmed back up too quickly.

I really needed that one to go well.

That's a shame about your fry, how are you planning to aerate the shipping container? Or are u just going to put oxygen into the bag? I can't even imagine taking the time to count all those, I didn't realize your tilapia were being that productive, what ever happened with the tilipia and your backyard pool set up, sorry I was out of the loop for about two month. Good note I got store credit dor my dead ray so now im just waiting for them to get in a shipment of nice rays so I can pick one out

When you ship them do you need to fill the bags with oxygen?

Yes, I have been all along. Couldn't afford a real regulator though, so I bought a set of those little mini-torches. One bottle doesn't go far, and it's a PITA...but it did save me once recently when I was working on a vehicle.

It isn't the shipping container I need to heat and aerate, it's the container that I count them into prior to bagging them.

The pool is doing pretty decent, but I did have a lot die because I never had time to set up a proper bio-filter. Of the remaining ones, they gave me some fry and there are some fingerlings growing out in there as a result. Encouraging enough to get more of them set up next spring with proper filtration.

What do you plan on doing with the ones in the pool when winter rolls around
