I tried it to see if I could bring my Nitrates from between 10-20 to between 0-10. It had little to no effect on Nitrates but I was surprised that it actually seemed to polish my water pretty well. I run 100 micron filter socks and my tank water is always clear but after using purigen it really looks like the tank is empty with fish floating in mid air.

The recharging does make me nervous I always test a small amount of water for chlorine before putting them back in the tank. Not sure If I will purchase more when they run out or not yet but I don't regret trying it.

It almost makes me wonder If I am "imagining" the clearer water. Someone should come over and randomly put a placebo in my tank to see if I can tell

Trev I think your the closest lol

Still waiting on a sales pitch OR a simple explanation of what it is and what it is supposed to do.......

A magic substance that eats Nitrate? Wouldn't it be cheaper to incorporate plants or simply change more water?

It could be cheaper then water changes IF it actually removed nitrates when you factor in the number of times you can re-charge. It would all depend on what you pay for water.
But like I said it gets an f+ in nitrate removal. Any results I think I may be getting from using it can't be narrowed down to the purigen so I don't really have a sales pitch.

What is the difference between chemi pure and purigen in your experience. I was considering trying chemi pure but I was put off by the statement that it will balance your ph

I probably run purigen every third week for about a week before it is spent, I like to give it a lot of time after recharge because using bleach makes me nervous

Besides price they both did basically the same thing.. chemipure was alot cheaper and carbon based. The only reason i used it was i had a extremally high bio load and wanted something to help put my mind at ease. I never noticed any PH swing or buffer but i never checked my PH

I'm open to a sales pitch!

But as someone who believes firmly in KISS I really don't understand what it is, what it does, or why I should spend any $ on it. From what I DO know of it, is it not just a bandaid for improperly maintained or designed systems?

Right now I view it the same as FX5s. Won't be found anywhere in my house.

+1 for snake oil.

Its good to have on hand for a shiz hits the fan scenario if you can get alot of it for a good price but yes KISS all the way

Currently using it for small tank (Non-ray) and happy but "recharging" it makes me nervous....

IMHO - Should NOT be necessary at all if tank is well balanced and maintained.

What he said...

yes using it will make you see your water very well polished thats not your eyes playing tricks on you. but if your tank is running as it should then its not needed i would by a small HOT vortex to polish your tank once a month even the magnum HOT with the polish cartridge works very well..

As far as recharging it just follow the directions. I never had a issue and i always gave a little shot of prime right before it went back into a tank

So this stuff falls somewhere in between Carbon and bio media then or?????

So basically what everyone can agree on is that in a properly designed system built around rays it IS snake oil?

The main difference between purigen and carbon is that purigen will not affect trace elements which can be a problem with carbon.

I would't use it as a replacement for bio media

I would say the only reason it isn't 100% snake oil is the water polishing aspect. But as stated that can be achieved a ton of different ways that are probably cheaper
