thats funny, alot of products are like that. just some people like paying for pixi dust.
, my tds reads between 40 to 120 depending on temp for my tap and after my di homade filter its around 8, in my 220 with my rays its 650.
Tds meter should cost around $40 for dual reading, input and out put separate.

Cool, I would be interested to know what my readings might be. What would you consider a high enough reading that it is time for a water change for example

Homemade DI filter? Can you please share more?

if you have such a large tank it would be crazy not to have a 24/7 water change in place mine changes 200 gal per day and since the 2 years my system has been set up i have not done 1 water change by hand

with a 24/7 water change you dont need to waste money on the majic dust

That's my point exactly...... I do have one. Last I checked I was about 160/day.

I'm sure this stuff may have it's place, but I feel a ray tank isn't it. A properly designed system (even by a hillbilly) is more then adequate. IF this stuff is just a sponge for toxins then that's a far cry from eating Nitrate. I'm just a lil foggy on exactly how it achieves whatever it is supposed to achieve.

Let's see if I got this right? So IF you crank up the drip, flush the system and WC enough to hit 0 Nitrate then with the use of this stuff it should STAY 0?

rays do just fine in high nitrates
my 350g was stocked to the max and i was doing 2 x 25% water changes per week and was lucky to get the nitrates down below 120ppm but my rays bred in that not once but twice
its just rubbish that you need to get nitrates below 50ppm for rays you will be fighting a losing battle trying to get it below that unless you have 27/7 water change in my tank now its about 20ppm but thats what my tap water is
as for getting super low nitrates whats the point if it doesnt affect the rays

I don't think purigen would ever keep a heavily stocked tank at 0 nitrates unless you used about 100 gallons of it.

I don't think 0 Nitrates is a must for keeping rays. They would probably survive in fairly high nitrates and possibly even do well but why not try to provide the best possible home for them since they don't have a choice in the matter

the proof is in the keeping if they breed they should be happy right
i kept rays in that high nitrate for over 6 years from new born pups to the age of 5 years old
some fish cant handle high nitrates some can
i kept aros tigrinus cat tigers/dats flagtail and rays all did great
if not saying we shouldnt provide the best water but rays can handle a much wider water spectrum than other fish ie different ph and high nitrates
its just amo cooper and nitrite rays cant handle but thats just the same with any fish

The stuff works. I've used it in my salt tanks for awhile now. I really think the people having the issues are not using it properly. Using RO/DI is a must, otherwise you'll never get rid of all the nitrates.

This is not my video but I use something similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPY5vLv2pH8

Thats just a sand filter been using them for years on a much bigger scale than the one in the video 10 x bigger

if thats in a sand filter then you would need to turn the sand filter off everytime it changes colour killing off the sand filter as the bacteria in a sand filter dies fast the way that guy has it running he will be pumping the media back into the sump as the flow level is way to high it should be a min of 3inch from the top of the reactor

im also not happy using a product you regen with bleach

i have my sand filter set up so it pumps from the sump throw the sand filter then return pipe back to the sump with a pipe drilled with lots of holes and a sheet of carbon filter pad 12x12inch wraped around the pipe this works great

It looks like he has a sponge at the top preventing the media from exiting the filter. He is using this as a chemical media reactor so he wouldn't be too concerned about the BB. I am sure he has other filters on the tank that handle bio filtration.

Not a bad idea for a cheap reactor. But that amount would hardly make a dent in a large ray tank
