Red belly Pacu breeding questions...

Nice looking pacu!

The type of ponds that I work with are a little easier, in that you can determine the gallons. I make a rectangle the size and depth of the future pond in landscape timbers, put a few iron rods through them, put heavy duty liner in, fill it up, and instant, attractive pond.

just be sure and get one up on DIY so you can teach everyone else as you do it .... :D

"DIY"

I'm not familiar with that term.

I have 3 in a 1/4 acre pond in Florida, they appear to thrive, have been in the pond for 10 years. I have never seen any breeding activity, but the pond has some deep parts so it could be hidden obviously.

They are at least 2.5 feet long and swim like lightning. They usually swim in a school
and appear as a family.

I wonder at their lifespan?

That is pretty cool, Garry. Gotta love large, tropical, viscous fish schooling in a "natural" place. I will probably do somthing to that extent when I move to Alabama.

The last thing this hobby needs is a surplus of pacus.

pacus are not vicious.... they eat vegetables... ...maybe you meant paranha..they are a schooling fish...and do not get as big :D

Liz, if you saw my friend's pacu you would never feel the same. He is about 20", and a black pacu. He will tear feeder fish out of your hand...

I don't plan on selling them. I have a buddy with a new water garden down in Florida that wants a school of these. He's been in the hobby for 20+ years. I guess I was a little "hostile" there, perhaps the result of a 2 day power outage and sleep deprivation...lol.
BTW, well aware of a pacu's requirements, looks like a nice reason to get a new tank...:)
and when you do, make sure its 350g+
