Liz, if you saw my friend's pacu you would never feel the same. He is about 20", and a black pacu. He will tear feeder fish out of your hand...
That is not the correct diet for them.. they are vegetarians... pacus learn this from the owner... .. they love to eat... so if that is what you offer them they will eat it.. but in the wild they go for plant matter...berries dropped from birds... leaves... nuts.... etc... mine ate peas, zuchini, cuccumber and peanuts and bananas and very small pieces of raw carrots..and cichlid pellets...and as a treat i would give them frozen silversides and shrimp.. :D
Diet - Pacu's are reported to be herbivores but are in fact omnivorous (eats anything).
Sinking food pellets such as HBH's Super Cichlid Sinkers or Spirulina Pellets are very good foods to keep a healthy Pacu. They need a balanced diet so giving them veggies such as romaine lettuce, peas, carrots, celery, zucchini and fruit such as nectarines, apples, grapes are recommended in their diet. Algae wafers are a favorite also.

Id say you will need to get your hands on a 12x4x4 to persuade them to breed. With a male and 3 females, with an awesome filter system regular water changes and plenty of tanin's in the water. A mixed diet of nuts and things with greens like spinich etc and they may be persuaded!

Liz, the feeder fish are a "treat" type deal, more or less fun for the owner. The staple is peas and diced carrots.

Patron, if you read the rest of this thread you would see that it will be a 800 gallon.

BTW, I didn't realize how serious everyone is on this forum. The forums I am coming from are a little more laid back and not so judgemental.

not judging you at all... just enlightening you... we are open, honest and try to be informative as possible.. please don't take our posts the wrong way....

Just seems like you all assume everything.....

Perhaps I'm a little serious myself...

Anyway - I guess I will wait until I move to Alababama to breed pacu. Thanks for the help everyone.

You sound like a person with the potential for being a great fishkeeper.. we just need to say it all because it is pacus we are talking about.. and pacu have so many issues people just don't know about unless you tell them... i want you to succeed... cannot wait... looking forward to it..so best of luck..

Good luck. Definitely let us know if it works out. When you start the project, keep track of things like lighting schedule, ph, nitrates, temp, etc. Would be interesting.
