Nice looking tank and fish.

I'm surprised the fish dont have more imprwssive breeding colors.

My Oblongum, the female fans the eggs and the male stands guard.

My pair had eggs Sat night. They hatched 3 days later. They are not free swimming yet but should be anu day now.

Yours should be on a similar time schedule I would think.

When ever I put fry in one of those breeder nets, they die within a couple hours. Not sure why.

GL with yours and keep us posted....Bill

Thanks Bill. I agree, I am not real sure why they arent in breeding colors. Thats just how they look everyday. It also seems to be a small spawn though so maybe its related. The female has only been in the tank for a week or so though. The videos aren't real flattering on any of my fish's colors but you get the idea. You should put up some pics of your Oblongum's.

Probably are red ceibel but it looks a little like a rainbow cichlid with that lighter coloration. Might be the white substrate. Mine are much darker when they spawn but they are in a completely different tank scheme. Congrats on the spawn.

thanks. they get in breeding dress but dont stay like that, which is what i don't get. I assure you that they are red ceibal ;) male is straight from uruguay and female is f1.

Mine have spawned many times and usually there are 100-200 or so eggs.

The time i succesfully saved fry, I siphoned them out after they were free swimming 3 day. They went straight into a 26g fry tank with bubble filter. About 50 made it.

I fed them de-encapsulated brine shrimp eggs

I dont want to step on your thread but some pics of mine are in my gallery here

With chanchitos the females color up first...and the males follow.

As long as they're guarding eggs / babies, they stay in color. A good way to tell that they've lost interest is when they lose color.

Those are definitely Australoheros sp. "red ceibal".

they have either eaten them or started moving them. There are about 10 eggs left in the original spot, so I think they are moving the ones that are starting to wiggle. maybe

Mine hid wigglers in pits and moved them several times a day. Look closely...

I still cant find them but they are still guarding that area. the slate they laid thier eggs on is a big square and they dug the sand out from under half and this is where i suspect they are (i hope). there are just so many places to hide in that corner and it is not easy to see because of my computer desk. I guess time will tell.
