Hi everyone,

First of all I want to say that I don't condone Cichlid fighting at all, I don't encourage it. I am however very interested in it. Since we all put our cichlids in a much smaller environment to what they are used to in the wild, it is part and parcel of the mixed Cichlid aquarium, it creates personality among specific individual Cichlids and can determine the atmospgere of our aquariums.

I keep Jack Dempseys (3 in total) one large dominant male (8 inch) and a smaller female (6 inch) and small male (4 inch).

I want to create a debate regarding two of my favourite species.

Lets say it was a 100g and you had a large dominant male Red Devil at say 8 inch and a large dominant Jack Dempsey at around 8 inch. Who would win in a fight over territory if they wished to do so?

To further the debate, could anyone provide evidence of the two species co-existing peacefully together? I have a 100 Gallon with a mature 8 inch male and would like to add some other large CA cichlids in the near future.

Thanks for your input and please don't see this as a silly thread that promotes animal cruelty. I don't think it is a crime to assess Cichlid fighting as long as it is done sensibly.

Thanks

An aggressive Jack Dempsey is nothing compared to an aggressive Red Devil. An adult RD will likely not tolerate anything else in a 100 gallon tank, and it will be killed quickly.

Maybe you should look for more docile cichlids, since you dont like fighting, a red devil may not be the best option. Tons of other fish you could do. Maybe use the search

I agree 100%. I don't think you will find much of a debate with your questions. i think most people will agree that RD aggression ranks a lot higher than JD. An adult RD will very rarely accept tankmates unless they are in a very large aquarium, not 100gal. I am sure that some people have kept JD and RD together without many problems. I say that it is rare and only done in very large or overstocked aquariums.

I really love a nice looking male Dempesy but it can't go toe to toe with a Red Devil, your talking about a whole other level of aggression. No contest.

Thanks for your input everyone.

My ultimate dream would to have a RD/JD co-existing together and wondered whether if they did try to fight, would it become quite an even affair (basically no deaths or serious injury. From what your saying a large JD could potentially be killed?

Thanks again

I agree that the RD would ultimately win out, and to me the kicker here is mixing them as adults. This setup may be possible if starting very young and dithers could help. Though, a 100gal still could be too small.

i have an rd (female) that dominates my much larger male jag, an rd would destroy a jd, not worth the risk as they are a really cool fish

Pending on tank size it is possible. You would have to have a well-tempered JD and a smaller RD. As they grew they would learn to tolerate each other, In theory. In reality, Rd will tear a JD up. Jd are rather peaceful fish.
