Jack Dempsey vs. Red Devil..the name says all the Devil wouldnt tolerate anything and would most definitely kill it..im sure im not the only one here as it looks that would assume Jack Dempsey has met his destiny if this was a real occurance..

I know female cichlids are mean too but males can do more damage, especially male JD's and male Red Devils who seem to grow significantly larger than females.....RD's are definately on my to do list.

Again... females are just as mean. They can grow to 12", males to 14". They're not much smaller. The meanest fish I ever had was a female RD.

I've not been keeping fish long, but one thing I'd never do is put a RD in with my Dempsey's. My male is a mean little son of a gun, but compared to a RD... no contest. Most Dempsey's are skittish while every RD I've ever seen will try to do anything in their power to get through that glass to get you.

Great input to the debate everyone. It seems the RD has won this one.

To add one final point, what if the JD was crazy and was about as mean as a similar sized RD and did wish to fight over territory, is the red Devil naturally more powerful, stronger than a JD with greater bite force, stronger jaws and bigger teeth?

I was reading a book that said that Red Devils have the dentistry to back up their rightful position as one of the true aggressors of the cichlid family, but I havent seen a pic of their teeth?

Thanks again

A RD will more than likely still win because its probably more powerful. also, RD do have some teeth, i can hear mine when he bites the glass. It can be hard to see them with his lips, and i am going to guess they are smaller because of him biting the glass and moving rocks.

Cool,

Well since the Red Devil certainly won that contest.......

How would a large adult male do in a battle with a Jaguar Cichlid?

I won't mention the Dovii since it is quite obvious that they are at the top.

Alot of speculation
I had a breeding female RD living just fine with a female JD-Gold severum-oscar,clownknife,pacu,dovii........Although I had the space....Thery lived peacefully together as long as one didn't come around the eggs once laid....
This goes back to what was previously mentioned by others. If you have enough tank space RDs will do a lot better with tankmates. This isn't generally the case with small tanks. My advice wasn't based on speculation. I have owned both species and The RDs were very aggressive towards any and everything. JDs aren't wired and built like RDs. The thought of a Jag and a RD in the same tank is a little different. Both fish attain good size and power with the bite force to inflict damage. I think this contest would be 50/50. I've had both Jags and RDs and they both didn't back down to anything.

It looks like there are more personal experiences (evidence) with RD's than conjecture, so I think its fair to say its not speculation. Youre 1 of 2 that have had "success" in this thread (quoted because we dont know the tank size, rd size, other fish size, overstocked or not etc). Not a very likely outcome based on the evidence presented.

Forgive me for asking, but are you actually wanting to house two fish species that will fight? Or is this all purely for theoretical purposes...
