Red Devil Male Vs Jack Dempsey Male

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, JD have the reputation for being "pugnacious" but their aggression level is not even that bad! I wouldn't house them with something delicate like angels or Discus, but a Jack Dempsey can coexist with other cichlids of similar temperament (convict, firemouth) in a 100g easily. A Red Devil is simply murderous. If you've never owned one before, you haven't experienced the pure rage they seem to exhibit towards their tankmates. They regard other fish as something to be eliminated quickly and violently. I would never trust a RD in a 100g with anything.

I currently own two red devils and my female is 8inches and my male is 6inches. i had a JD before but it could not survive because the aggression of my 8inch female

honestly, i wouldn't keep anything with my red devil, he is slightly aggressive, he's in a 125g by himself, and he owns that whole tank and my living room. I would keep a jack with something more peaceful, i have mine with a mayan, and oscar in a 125g

Yeah my RD messed up ANYTHING in the tank..I tried an Oscar but had to take it out because it was so bad..anything near its size was always targeted first for the kill since I'm guessing was the most threatening to its well being..gl tho

your FH must have never stepped foot in that tank then...:D(unless thats not your fish in your avitar)

also op if you do intreduce another fish and your worried about aggression... try to take all the fish out and rearrange the whole tank then put them back in... i was suggested this by a couple people for my texas(killed my whole tank.. I still thinks she has FH in her) and killed the bigger midas i tried to introduce like this) didn't work for me but i had 75 so maybe it will work for you... all i know is make sure your home so your gf isn't calling you up crying saying that the fish is getting slammed and dragged into and around the tank.... i'm going to try to introduce more fish into a 140 with my texas but we will see what happens...

I havent owned a RD before but the story about a female making life hard for a male JD is crazy! You would think a Jack Dempsey, being big and powerful would be fine with an RD. I guess I will have to wait for a species only for a RD sometime in the future.

Do Red Devils have teeth similar to a JD? I am wondering what makes a RD so dominant compared to other cichlids, is it purely just their mentality? Would love to learn some more about them as I have yet to own one and won't get to own one for a while! Post some stories and even some pics of your RD's if you can everyone.

Thanks

i netted a whole bunch at university of hawaii's campus like 10 yrs ago. 4inches or so, then grew em to 8in....

if there was a place known as hell, it was that tank.

possessed fish, RD's are.

Don't be fooled into thinking female cichlids are nicer than males. :) In many cases they're much WORSE because they still lay eggs, even without a mate, and then become unbelievably aggressive towards anything that gets anywhere near them.

Species-only tank is a good idea for a RD. And remember only ONE RD for the tank, unless you have at least a 125g then you could try a pair.
