Red devil tank mates??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With what fish you have in the that size tank regardless of a possible future tank, its not advisable to put anything thing else in it much less an arowana. With that size foot print, housing anything with the Red Devil is gonna result in dead fish. Get your tank finished then get more fish, its thats simple.

FYI - adding a pike to a tank that houses a very large, very aggressive RD, that's been flying solo, isn't a good idea either. I would think that someone who states that they are a very experienced cichlid keeper would already know what the outcome of that is going to be.

Pyramid_Party called this one correct from the get go .............

Big no no! I would just be patient and set your 200 up first, that way your safe to go! But still not sure about keeping things with Red Devils... they are very mean fish.

The link provided by R.D. should clear things up in this thread. A large Red Devil that has already claimed a 55 gallon as his territory will not accept a tank mate. Anything new will be killed. Also as already mentioned by others, a 55 is too small for either fish, especially if one is already dominant an aggressive. If a much larger tank is under construction, wait until it is finished before you try mixing large fish.

my pike and my rd get along fine, i dunno, a pike is a much more suitable tank mate than a friggin aro...
that was the reason i suggested it

The best tank mates I've found for my male red devil is mbuna African cichlids. I had them together in a 90 gallon for years. Give the Africans tons of hiding places and even though he would love to kill them, he'll never catch them..lol

The water parameters of the crater lakes where red devils (citrinellus &/or labiatus) are found is almost exactly the same as Lake Malawi. Not that I would recommend keeping mbuna with red devils, just sayin ..........
