Red dovii??? (Xanthic dovii)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been bugging the guys who HAVE the TRUE yellow / xanthic jags, to get on breeding them, but none of them have followed through - which is a shame, because all it would take is a few months. That was a few years ago now.

Nope - they are fertile, and there have been fry - but the owners won't distribute them.

Actually - the same goes for you - yellow lip dempsey guy! Get some fry going :)

Sorry but the pic of dovii in question is not what would be referred to as a red dovii. Could be a color morph, hybrid, etc. but as cichlid fish pointed out in the link he posted, that is the red dovii and IMO, yes they would be highly desirable and most likely expensive. Not only was the current in the collecting river fast but there are also very high cliffs to access the river... I've never seen proof of location so part of me speculates that those high cliffs and fast streams are to scare people away lol. But one day I'm sure someone will attempt the collection and hopefully soon;)

The pic is a little sketchy but now we have an actual
Video. I'm hopefull and believe it's an actual red morph. Who knows. People who breed Dovii might get red morph fry that never make it to adult hood .

I hope one day someone will have some luck collecting them too. I agree they would be very desirable. There are still a lot of wild variations of cichlids and sp. that we have yet to find. The environment and isolated locations make this difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of local people in Costa Rica already know.

The owner of this Dovii confirmed that it is indeed not a hybrid and that is was collected from the San Juan river by the border of Nicaragua, if any one cares to know.
