If you look at any good flowerhorn, they will have a good hump at say 3 to four inches.. hence good genes...if it doesnt have a hump at such a large size hes not going to just sprout one over night.. Your are one hundred percent correct, genes, water chemistry, good food, and space are a must. You need to learn how to read my friend

fish only show good KoK at 3-4inches based on what? GENES, WATER CHEMISTRY, GOOD FOOD, and SPACE!! also if you clearly LOOK at those photos from the OP. You will clearly see this KoK, and has probably went down to, humm what it is now (in the photos) because of what 4 factors? I will also add 1 more to this very instance. BREEDING!

please elaborate to me my friend, on how you feel i don't know how to read?

But you dont go from Zero to hero.. you may magnify the size of the hump by a little bit but i would not expect drastic changes.. this is an example of a nice RS.. this is something worth well above 300 with a female mate. I wouldnt expect the male in the OP's post to look like this with just a water quality change..

i don't think anyone said anything about his KoK getting bigger due to water changes... i think what he was referring to was giving the right 4 factors, a late bloomer can really shine. each flowerhorn is different, and what works for one to be healthy may not work for another... this is where the relationship between these fish and their owners gets deeper then just any ole CA/SA cichlid.

Im not going to argue with you..BUT i have never seen a late blooming flowerhorn..Most of the flowerhorns that are going to have giant KOKs all bloom at an early age.. and All the flowerhorns i have seen have an increased KOK size while breeding.. Maybe saying you dont know how to read is wrong, SORRY. I dont think you understand what im saying. You never said water changes helps out with hump size but you mention water quality, and how do you improve water quality? water changes.. im agreeing with what you say just not about the hump in the OPs post. it is non existent or close too.. seeing that there are Flowerhorns with giant KOKS popping up all over the buy and sell i wouldnt waste my money on THAT fish. I was simply answering the question asked by the OP.

I dont mean to push you two but please do argue, there some good info being put out here. After you two finish I'll buy you both a beer so you can chill out.lol

I wouldn't pay $300 for them. They are low grade SRS/RMs. I also doubt they are breeding pairs. First of all, they are divided off. Second of all, MOST(99.9%) male RS are infertile.

If you are looking for a nice solid colored cichlid that gets big, just get a high quality red devil ,midas, king kong parrot with kok, or a high quality rosequeen. If it needs to be a FH, on top of my head a better quality RS, flame, or a GM(golden monkey) is your best bet. If you need help looking for a nice fish, let me know. But I gatta let you know ahead that they will NOT be cheap. When it comes to FHs, you gatta pay to play.

JP

I would not buy the pair even if they cost $150, but what you think is nice and what I think is nice are different.

A fish pair does not mean that they will get along when not breeding. At times, the only time they really get along is during breeding and will kill each other before or after breeding.

Red shock male are very infertile but not 100% infertile.
Red shock are very similar to kamfah, in that the water hump, if it has a water hump, will take some time to get the hump up but can go flat in a few hours. The majority of red shock that I kept are different compared to flowerhorn or kamfah because they are very particular and will test the owners patience. The color can be bright red or orange and white when not happy. They are also very mean.

If you are not familar with flowerhorn, may I recomend keeping a zz flowerhorn or like other post have stated, a jing kang that is more staple and easier to keep.
