He's fine for now. As long as you do water changes at least once every 2 weeks, and you have a good filter. You need a bigger tank as soon as possible, though. Just don't disregard that. You need a bigger tank soon. He can live in that for 6 months max... that's just based on what my cross grew at... he grew a lot until he got to about 10 inches then stopped. But your RTC might be faster... I heard they're faster.
Anyway... You should probably get a bigger tank as soon as you can... But aren't we all trying to get a bigger tank?
my tsn has grown 3" in like 1 month. im astonished, plus i also heard that rtc grow faster then tsn's. bro i suggest a bigger tank and now. either that or build him a makeshift pond until you can get him properly housed. even just a rubbermaid kiddie pool would work for now.
i do water changes twice a week mine and my filter does a pretty good job...ok will put him in my dad's 75gal. in the meantime to buy me more time to get that 130gal
BTW he has only spent 2 mos. with me so far..i got him at about 3"..already w/ gill curl and jam packed in a tank loaded w/ other rtc, spotted gars, and other fish..
hate to brake it to you tho, a 130 gal will house him for maybe 6 months if you are lucky. maybe not even 4. like i said go to target and get a pool or something and set it up for him. same way you would a tank just with extreme filtration. im sure the flaming would stop and you could even get more with the right sized pool/pond. just my 2 cents.
he goes into the 75 gal.. then when gets big that will be enough to convince my dad to convert our pool into my RTC's new home..if not, you will be seeing him in the marketplace section...i will miss him..
I have a question though..i had in fact tried to move my RTC into that 75 gal w/ an Australian aro but i had major probs...one of them was that the aro tried to take a snap at him at first but then he calmed down and didn't touch anymore..then just a couple of hours later I observed that my RTC's fins and tail were starting to get torn up..I checked the water with my ammonia test kit which is the only 1 i have and it tested 0 ppg...a few more days and it got severely worse with his back fin and his lower left fin...it was torn severely..is nitrate or nitrate the culprit here or is it something else?I'm 100% sure it wasn't the aro who did it..but he was still eating actively..i then put him back in my fifteen gal. and then he started to heal..took about a week for the tearing to heal..how do i fix the water params before i put him back in the 75 gal??
aussie aro's are usually extremely aggressive, most will kill other fish in the tank and need to be kept alone. some are ok though. id say it was the aro that caused the frayed fins
