Red Tail Catfish Pictures 4 real this time!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah but i observed that after the first initial attempt to attack, it became quite docile to the RTC...it looked like his fins were deteriorating slowly coz of the water...now i'm afraid to put him back there...

Before anyone can buy a RTC they should have to prove that they have a bigenouth home for it from the start or there should be a lisence for keeping large fish as it is just not fair on them. When i bought mine i was asked to prove that i had a tank of a min of 6x2x2 beforw they would sell it to me and this should always be the case. It's not a gold fish were at 16 you can pop in to a local shop and buy one there should be a age limit of 18 and tank size. Give it a few week's may be a mounth and we will all hear how this poor little RTC as DIED!!!!!!! :(

If hes getting a bigger tank get off his back guys, Small fish small tank, It's a temporary setup, the fish will be fine for atleast 2 months.

Despite his flamings, he has continued to ask for advice so atleast he cares.

I agree that RTC should not be sold without proof of knowledge and tank size. Even a 6X2X2 is a stop gap.

I love fish keeping but I hate the way such a high percentage of fish are treated. When I ran a shop I hated the families who came every week to replace the losses that happen every week!

I love red tails but banning or restricting the supply of the collection would be good. Set the price at £1000+ would help focus the ownership, some of the cash should be pumped in to better education.

My LFS (Maidenhead aquatics) have a really good poster with a smart car saying "if your tank cant house this car then you cannot keep Red Belly Pirahnas" (or other big fish)

If you bought a horse and kept it in a garage or a 10ft garden then the RSPCA would be all over you...Redtail in a 4ft tank goes on all the time!

i dont wanna mini-mod but this topic shouldnt get locked of anything... calm it down guys.
if this guy cares enough to wanna convert his pool into his RTC's new house then god bless him.
BUT, OP, your dad will definitely not be keen on turning a pool into an rtc house. you must present a good arguement, and approach the topic much sooner than later.
fror example, having an rtc in an un-chlorinated pool that you can still swim in sounds fun and enjoyable for the whole family except and small children that may be eaten.

ok guys, i have been talking to my dad about this when my RTC had grown a little..my plan is to temporarily put him in our 75 gal with aro...my dad said if a can take care of him and he sees that it i getting too big for that 75 gal, either we will turn our pool into an RTC home or we will buy a smaller an cheaper pool which is adequate of size to house him for life...and also Plec123 you said that we can still swim in our pool even if it has the RTC in it? i mean it's no problem that its un-chlorinated and im not afraid of the RTC eating anyone as there are no small children here.. My problem with that is I am worried about the rtc..when we swim there he might get stressed out or something and i don't want that happening..i really had no intention of swimming or letting others swim in our pool once he have given it to the rtc,.. but now that you said its ok it will a plus factor to fully convince my dad to rehouse him there becoz he will think that its gonna be alot more fun to swim w/ the rtc as long a we don't go crazy and splash around and rough house at the pool..more like a relaxing, quiet dip..thanks for all your help and concern guys..i really wasn't expecting all sugar coated advice and i really dont care how much you guys flame me but as long as its fr the good of the fish then keep em coming..
