I have a red tail catfish that is 5.5 inches and a bass that is 8 inches. Not in the same tank now but was wondering if they could be or would the bass eat the catfish? Also all the catfish does is sit on the bottom of the tank I have him in and doesn’t move. Is this normal? I know they’re known to be sluggish but he hardly ever moves. He eats a lot although so I’m not too worried. Is there anything I can do to make him more active like keep the lights on or take things out or put things in the tank? Here are some pictures

No, the bass is highly unlikely to even try. The RTC will quickly outgrow the bass though, so soon you will have to take out the bass, when the RTC is around a foot and the bass is of comparable size.

Small RTC are known to hide during the day. More light, no hide will only stress it more. As it grows, it will become more confident and active (usually after 8"-10"), yet not an iridescent shark active but it will take a swim every now and then and won't need to hide. It will need space for swimming though. If someone's RTC past 1' is sedentary, to me this means the tank's too small for it.

It will never hit 5', given what we know. It may get to 4' but it will take a long time, probably around 15-20 years. It should be 2' in about 1-1.5 years under usual care.

We have a red tail catfish, approximately 14” in our 150 gallon with a pair of freshwater stingrays, 1 peacock bass and a Florida gar. The gar is also approximately 14”. We woke up this morning (08/25/19) and the red tail had himself a feast and devoured our gar... I wouldn’t worry about the bass.
