Aight man, thanks for clearing it up for me. I kind of want to start over now with the festae, as the other "male" I have is starting to show the same colors, etc.

If you're not happy with them, put them up for sale. Start over with some nice high quality F1's from a good breeder or go F0. Personally I'd prefer F1's. They're just as nice looking but easier to keep and hardier.

It does look male however it also has a confusing hew on the front of the topfin.

male festae DO get a black dorsal, just like a female sometimes. I remember a member at WW who's festae bred. BOTH of them looked identical in coloration (red w/black bars all over & black dorsal area).

NO they don't. Two females of most cichlid species have been known to lay eggs together. It doesn't mean they bred. Festae are very distinct once mature coloration comes in.
